But for the fourth straight season, Fresno State was eliminated in the women’s NCAA Tournament first round after shooting just 14-for-50 from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs (25-8) were dropped by the Tar Heels 82-68, marking the final game for head coach Adrian Wiggins’ winningest senior class in school history.
Fresno State came out firing, leading by as much as eight with 15 minutes to go in the first half. Lucas scored a game-high 22 points, snagged six rebounds and advanced to the second round.
In her final game as a Bulldog, Fresno State basketball’s leading scorer (men’s or women’s) Jaleesa Ross had a hot start, but cooled off en route to 14 points, including going 4-for-20 from three-point land.
Senior Haley Munro lead the Bulldogs with 15 points off the bench, but it wasn’t enough as Fresno State’s preseason goal of reaching the Sweet 16 was dashed by a talented Tar Heels squad. North Carolina’s size in the paint posed the biggest threat, out rebounding the Bulldogs 63 to 49. The Tar Heels had five players score in double figures as well.
As a team, Fresno State shot 29.6 percent from the field and 28 percent from beyond the arc. In contrast, North Carolina shot 46.6 percent from the field and 37.5 percent on three-point attempts.
Fresno State has been plagued by poor shooting in NCAA Tournament games in the past. Against Baylor in last season’s first-round game, the Bulldogs shot just 29.4 percent from beyond the arc, and just 22.2 percent in a loss the year before to California.
