FOURTH QUARTER Fresno State 23, Idaho 20
BREAKDOWN: The Vandals used a 10-play drive to open the final quarter to narrow the Fresno State lead to 13-6 off a 26-yard field goal by Idaho kicker Trey Farquhar. Fresno State kicker Kevin Goessling answered back with a 35-yard field goal of his own to push the score to 16-6. On the ensuing kickoff, however, Idaho kick returner Justin Veltung burst through the middle of the field for an 84-yard touchdown, giving Fresno State just a three-point lead 16-13. Then, after holding Fresno State to a three-and-out, Idaho took its first lead of the game 20-16 off a four-yard touchdown run. That set up quarterback Ryan Colburn with his chance to mount a game-winning drive with 2:01 left. The senior did just that, completing three passes and rushing for 25 yards on the final drive capped off by A.J. Ellis’ one-yard touchdown with 14 seconds on the clock.
BIG PLAY: Veltung’s kick return was the first touchdown return Fresno State had given up in 2010 and set the Vandals up with a quick score with over six minutes remaining in the game.
INTERESTING STAT: Fresno State’s three-point win is the lowest margin of victory over Idaho since the Vandals joined the WAC in 2005.
