This from Patrick J. Buchanan, conservative columnist and adviser for Richard Nixon in his campaign for president against Mr. McGovern.

To solve the budget crisis, Buchanan argues, Republicans will not agree to tax hikes and Democrats won’t agree to gut the entitlement programs they hold so dear. The necessary cut? The United States’ empire.

And you know what? That’s a good thing.
