For the first time in 19 games, the Fresno State women’s basketball team lost, this time on the season’s biggest stage””the Western Athletic Conference tournament championship game.
With six seconds remaining in the game, Louisiana Tech’s Tarkeisha Wysinger missed the back end of a one-and-one. Fresno State’s Joh-Teena Filipe snagged the rebound, extended the outlet pass to LaShay Fears who then took the ball coast-to-coast but missed the game-tying layup as the Lady Techsters stole the 68-66 victory.
The win marks Louisana Tech’s first Western Athletic Conference title since 2006 while denying the Bulldogs a shot at three straight.
The ‘Dogs had very little answer for tournament MVP Shanavia Dowdell in the paint who led the game with 20 points and 19 rebounds. Both Hayley Munro and Jaleesa Ross took home All-Tournament Team honors. Munro outscored all Bulldogs with 15 points.
Head coach Adrian Wiggins still holds strong hope for an NCAA Tournament bid, which would be the first time two WAC teams participated in the Big Dance. The seedings will be announced Monday.
“We wanted to be the WAC champions and we are,” Wiggins said. “We wanted to win the tournament championship but we fell short on that. We still want to get to the NCAA tournament and we want to win games.”
