California State University, Fresno received a record 14,478 applications for fall 2010 admission with a flurry of submissions on the Nov. 30 deadline.
Bernie Vinovrski, associate vice president for enrollment, said nearly half of the prospective Fresno State students have been notified of their acceptance, and the remaining applications should be completed by mid-January. Another 5,486 upper division transfer applications were received.
The 23-campus California State University system received a record 609,000 plus undergraduate applications in the two-month priority application period (Oct. 1-Nov. 30), 70,000 on deadline day, and 10,000 of those between 10 p.m. and midnight.
“We are pleased that students heard our appeals to apply on time and that more than half did so well in advance of the deadline,” Vinovrski said. “Our record numbers show that the demand for a CSU education is high even in the face of fee increases and other budget-related concerns.”
He re-emphasized that students from the four-county service area of Fresno, Madera, Kings and Tulare counties who meet eligibility requirements will be admitted even as the university deals for the first time with impacted status at the first-time freshman level.
“Impacted” means that the campus has more applications during the priority filing period than can be accommodated. The university will use minimum CSU criteria for admitting first-time freshman applicants from high schools in Fresno State’s designated local area and from other San Joaquin Valley schools historically served by Fresno State.
Eligible upper division transfers who met the Nov. 30 application deadline for fall 2010 admission also will be accommodated. The campus is closed to lower-division transfers, second baccalaureate and postbaccalaureate unclassified applicants.
