The CSU Walkout Coalition staged their first debate-style meeting with President Welty today. The president addressed the list of demands presented to him two weeks ago and fielded students questions in the Peace Garden.
Welty, students hash out issues

it is a CSU thing, and it starts with chancellor Reed. When the man at the top is corrupt as hell, everyone below follows suit. Just look at FPD, Dyer is a racist pedophile, and the cops below him are out of control, killing, raping and stealing cars as they please.

There are several presidents across the 23 campuses that have similar corrupt ties between its campus auxillary and private “donors,” businesses, etc. …google: cfa investigation csu for more details

jesi: Other CSUs have had protests and actions similar to the walkout and rally and continue to have them.

so there is corruption involved in this issue?…
Was there any shortage before the state government decreased the funding to CSUs?
Well you have a point because it may seem that CSU Fresno has the only issue wherein students walked out and rallied while other CSUs haven’t had this after the state cut the funding for state universities

Oh yeah thats right and we also should blame the state for increasing the fees on our campus locally right? We should also tell the state to tell Welty to have a shared sacrifice?
Why would the state fund a corrupt CSU System Jesi? Can you answer that or must you continue to regurgitate the same rhetoric that makes no sense.

Students should not blame the President because it is the STATE that funds the State University and not the President. Students should go to Governor A. Schwarzenegger and demand funding to the University

He lied on Campus Pointe • Nov 4, 2009 at 9:35 am
My favorite line from Welty was when he said no public money was being used to develop Campus Pointe. Setting aside the fact that the land is a public resource, what Welty failed to mention was that Auxiliary money is being used for the development. Where does the Auxiliary get its money? You guessed it, the public. When you buy textbooks, get something to eat, pay to live on campus, you fund Campus Pointe. Your fees that go to ASI – end up in the Auxiliary via things like management and HR fees, rent for ASI offices ($10,000). Like to use the bowling alley or play a video game? You just sent money to the Auxiliary. How about your rec center? Fees from students for “free” use of the rec center help pay for Save Mart Center. The Chancellor’s office sends money to the Auxiliary. Where does that come from? It is all a big shell game with increasing amounts of money intended for use in the education of students being laundered into Athletics and the Auxiliary. They then hide behind the fact that these are “private” corporations, and thus not subject to the same level of disclosure and transparency required in the public sector.
Passing bills that increase taxes and pour more money into a dysfunctional and corrupt system will solve nothing – in fact it will make things worse. We have a system that, despite years of financial crisis, increases administrator pay and positions while cutting classes and exploiting part-time faculty. We have more than $100 million to build a library addition (that just happens to include an entire floor dedicated to fancy offices for administration, but not enough money for things like classes, faculty and students. Until the structure of the entire CSU system and its funding is changed, more money just feeds the beast.

Step one: Get dictionary and look up definition of privatization.
Step two: With that definition in mind look at Campus Pointe for an example of said definition and concept. This Fresno State land can easily be used for academic/campus only uses versus mainly business/possible backup academic uses.
Step three: Put two and two together for example of privatization on Fresno State owned land.
While I will not say whether or not I myself support Campus Pointe, this is what I believe students are getting at when they mention “privatization of the university.”

Fellow commentators,
Say what you will about his decisions as president, but don’t mistake diplomacy for apathy on Welty’s part. He has department heads, donors, students, and several unions watching everything he says about the budget. Some of these groups have competing interests as the budget shrinks, which means that he has to keep a neutral tone in public to avoid dousing the fire with more gasoline.
Side note: the whole “privatizing the university” issue is starting to sound less legitimate and more like a talking point each time its used. I’m not commenting on its validity as an issue, just its presentation. If the protestors want support from the rest of us students, or anyone else for that matter, then they need to stop with the taglines and start backing up their statements.

The most scary thing i heard from weltys mouth was when he said the Master Plan of 1960 is “DEAD” and he has no intention of trying to do anything in reviving any of it. That goes to show where his priority is on education. He wont sign a document that says he is behind the students and their advocacy for higher ed, yet he claims he has done so on other levels…..but i think the most powerful thing he can do is sign a document. Wars have been started and stopped with a signature. Countries have been built and fragmented with a signature….and the most powerful thing Welty could do by signing a document…..he said “NO, NO, NO,NO” …..it is no wonder students are angry, he doesnt use his power to help them. But he uses it to sign off and pick up his paycheck in the Joyal Building, for that his signature is good for!!!

Welty was completely apathetic to the overall student response. It’s a shame that we have such a corrupt administration essentially privatizing and capitalizing on what should be an affordable public educational institution run by students, for the students. The administration puppets should be ashamed of themselves. Let alone the fact that they have done nothing to earn their ridiculously bloated salaries, they give leaders a bad name by claiming to support the higher education ‘Master Plan’ and would much rather sit back and watch it all fall to the ground while they continue to satisfy their greed.

Wow, so glad I got out of there when I did. I feel sorry for Welty, because I know he doesn’t have a ton of control over how much money the school gets, but at the same time, he does a wonderful job of being totally unsympathetic toward students’ dilemma.
Nice work on getting this up so fast!
