No. 1: Boise State Broncos (7-0)
Last week: Beat Hawaii, 54-9, in Honolulu
Next opponent: San Jose State
Why No. 1: Quarterback Kellen Moore leads the nation in quarterback ranking. The Broncos haven̢۪t lost a conference game since 2007 and are the class of the league until proven otherwise.
The Buzz: Despite rolling over Hawaii this past weekend, the Broncos fell to No. 7 in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) standings and were jumped by fellow non-automatic qualifier Texas Christian. If Boise State is going to play the role of BCS buster once again, they will need to win and win big the rest of the way.
No. 2: Nevada Wolf Pack (4-3)
Last week: Beat Idaho, 70-45, in Reno
Next opponent: Hawaii
Why No. 2: Nevada sits alone atop the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and has won four games in a row, establishing itself as the team many thought they would be at the beginning of the season. The Pack leads the conference in rushing and is getting stronger as the season goes on.
The Buzz: Nevada̢۪s recent success is likely to continue against a terrible Hawaii team this week. The first true test for the Wolf Pack will come in two weeks against Fresno State.
No. 3: Fresno State Bulldogs (4-3)
Last week: Beat New Mexico State, 34-3, in Las Cruces
Next opponent: Utah State
Why No. 3: Fresno State has won three games in a row in convincing fashion. Junior tailback Ryan Matthews leads the nation in rushing yards and is the ̢۪Dogs̢۪ catalyst on offense.
The Buzz: The ̢۪Dogs have too much talent for Utah State. Look for the Bulldogs to score early and often, setting up a key conference game at Idaho.
No. 4: Idaho Vandals (6-2)
Last week: Lost to Nevada, 70-45, in Reno
Next opponent: Louisiana Tech
Why No. 4: Despite their drudging at the hands of the Wolf Pack, the Vandals sit in a tie for third place in the WAC and have a shot to contend for the conference title.
The Buzz: The Vandals are not as bad as their showing in Reno. They are lead by a talented quarterback and should prevail against Louisiana Tech.
No. 5: Utah State Aggies (2-5)
Last week: Beat Louisiana Tech, 23-21, in Logan
Next opponent: at Fresno State
Why No. 5: The ranking may seem high, but the only reason the Aggies get the nod over Louisiana Tech is because of their narrow victory over Tech this past weekend.
The Buzz: The Aggies are not as bad as their record shows. They just can̢۪t seem to win the close games. Consecutive three-point losses to New Mexico State and Nevada hurt their conference standing and overall record.
No. 6: Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (3-4)
Last week: Lost to Utah State, 23-21, in Logan
Next opponent: at Idaho
Why No.6: The Bulldogs are a middle of the road team. They won̢۪t beat any of the top teams in the conference, but they won̢۪t lose to the bottom teams either. If the Bulldogs hope to join the elites of the conference, they can̢۪t lose a key road game to a team with the lowest conference home winning percentage (.318) since 2005, as the did last week.
The Buzz: The ̢۪Dogs are improving, but their upcoming schedule is brutal. Most likely, they won̢۪t win another game until their regular season finale.
No. 7: New Mexico State Aggies (3-5)
Last week: Lost to Fresno State, 34-3 in Las Cruces
Next opponent: at Ohio State
Why No. 7: The Aggies are a bad team, just not as bad as the conference bottom dwellers. Their run first, rely on defense attitude is just not working. The passing game must be more involved if the Aggies look to succeed.
The Buzz: Unfortunately for Aggie fans, New Mexico State faces a national powerhouse in Ohio State. The Aggies lack the athleticism, talent, coaching, experience and everything else needed to topple this giant. The WAC won̢۪t gain national respect in this one, look for the Buckeyes to end the game early and pile it on late; it̢۪s going to be ugly.
No. 8: Hawaii Warriors (2-5)
Last Week: Lost to Boise State, 54-9, in Honolulu
Next opponent: at Nevada
Why No. 8: The Warriors are far and away one of the two worst teams in the conference. They lost their third string quarterback against Boise State and managed only nine points, while turning the ball over six times.
The Buzz: Things are not looking up for the one-time conference powerhouse. They may be forced to play their fourth different quarterback this season and they catch a Wolf Pack team that is playing their best football of the season.
No. 9: San Jose State Spartans (1-5)
Last week: Bye
Next opponent: at Boise State
Why No. 9: The Spartans rank last or next to last in almost every statistical category. Their lone victory came against Cal Poly.
The Buzz: San Jose State will have the opportunity to knock Hawaii from the No. 8 spot in three weeks. Will the Spartans look to improve before then or just throw in the towel and be satisfied with being the laughing stock of the conference?

Pat Hill always says the same thing. “We’re gonna be playing a great football team,” and yet Utah is 2-5 and New Mexico is now 3-5. How good can these teams really be?
