Approximately 10 University High School students were stuck in an elevator in the Henry Madden Library for 45 minutes on Tuesday afternoon, University Police officials said.
According to Amy Armstrong, the Public Information Officer for the University Police Department, the elevator stopped functioning correctly due to improper usage by the students.
“When they were in the elevator, they all jumped, which set off the emergency mode in the elevator,â€Â Armstrong said in a phone interview to The Collegian.
The automatic shutdown of the elevators is in place in case of emergencies, such as earthquakes or fires, Armstrong said.
According to Armstrong, dispatchers received a call from the emergency phone located inside the elevator at 4:12 p.m. The elevator remained inoperable until a technician came to repair and reset the elevator.
The Principal of University High School was informed of the students̢۪ actions, Armstrong said.
“It’s not something that’s appropriate to do,â€Â Armstrong said.

The angels comment was mostly aimed at Brooke, but it was also a metaphor since you made public schools look so much worse, “smart one.”
You said that the pepper spray incident was blown out of proportion, but at least it wasn’t a flat out lie like your FUSD/CUSD stories. And to quote you verbatim, you said that I “will be beaten up by all those scrawny little kids and they 20 lbs backpacks full of books.” That doesn’t sound like any senate or UHS meeting I’ve ever heard of. I’m done here, you’ve proved to use nothing but attacks, lies, and threats to replace an actual argument. I’d quit if I were you too: I’ve got nothing to defend, and you just keep making yourself, your education, and your Alma mater look worse.

i never said anything about them being angels smart one, i actually said that they are flawed, obviously u can’t understand the point of my argument, which means ur education is not paying off…and i’m not saying i’m an angel or perfect in any way, or that my education is the best.
i’m not saying cut them a break at all, i’m saying deal with it as it comes, cause no matter what or where we would be, something is going to happen. I’ve personally seen State students acting more immature than UHS students, and by the way, the “pepper spray incident” was blown out of proportion by the collegian and other students. It was one small spray cause the kid didn’t know what it was after he found it in the backpack, I was there.
i’m egging him on to go do something, like go to the UHS meetings, or the State senate meetings to go and actively do something instead of sitting there doing nothing complaining to a bunch of people on here. I do respect your calling out of how i acted anonymous, as it shows more understanding/not understand and asking of why.

I think many are missing the point. The point is, is that UHS students are continuing to do stupid stuff that make them look really bad to everyone else. Stuff like this happens every single year. And its not only the students, as we have seen with the whole situation that happened last January.
Brooke and Mark, are you really trying to say that we should cut them a break for what these kids do? That even though they cause elevator mishaps, release pepper spray in public areas, run around like idiots through the student union, and inconvenience Fresno State students they should be allowed to use Fresno State public facilities?
and why are you egging Frank on by telling him he doesnt have the guts to go to the school and tell him how he feels? that is so elementary.
and brooke- how can you sit here and boast about all your accomplishments and how great you are? why are you trying to be an elitist? do you think that since you went to UHS and not some other fresno school that you are therefore better than them? that fresno state students cant achieve as much as you? thats disgusting.

Your lack of an argument is made clear by your need to resort to moronic physical threats. UHS students would beat me up? What does that have to do with anything? You said that these kids are angels who don’t have fights, but now you’re saying that they would beat me up.
Mark B: Note that both you and Brooke have heard about violence at FUSD/CUSD schools, and both of your stories basically begin with “I know a guy who” and that they are both second-hand accounts. I’m sure if a student was brutally murdered with a pencil or a student went clinically insane and severely injured two people that SOMEONE (other than you and your brothers) would have heard about it, and said ANYTHING about it on the internet. This doesn’t appear to be the case. Both you and Brooke consistently lie to both elevate UHS, and put down public schooling. You’re only making yourselves look worse. Enjoy your fake, sheltered lives.

Tyron, Tyrese, Frank, and everyone else. Brooke is not saying UHS is the best school out there, she never said anything about being an elitist u stupid commie, go back and learn ur history of the school before u make any judgments. The school has had a lot of trouble to get started and get to were it is today. The school pays for all of the classes that they students take at State, FYI. So state is making money off of them. It took at least 6 years for the school to finally get a place to build a decent building for themselves, and during those 6 years, stupid student’s like u guys bashed them and made them restart everything they had to do.
90% of the time, u guys don’t even know that there is a UHS student in ur class, i can guarantee that. Oh by the way, UHS Freshman and Sophomores r not supposed to b in the Union, if u ever notice at noon (if for some stupid reason ur there at that time) all the UHS kids r sitting around their school, not in the union. They space their classes so that they have as few UHS students doing nothing or being in the union.
And Frank, yes if someone goes to a clovis unified or fresno unified district school, they r more likely to get into a fight, b involved, or be a victim of one. I have two brothers that work for both fresno unified and clovis unified and i know all of the stories u don’t know. Did u hear about the kid that got stabbed 5 times in the chest with a pencil from FUSD? or maybe the guy that went clinically insane at CW trashing a room and sending 2 people to the hospital, both of which happened in the last year that no one knew about?
I’m not saying UHS is perfect, cause obviously the teacher that got arrested speaks for itself, but u should think for once, maybe that school is a haven for all the students that r outcasted and need something they can look forward to, instead of being scared that they may get beat up. But now they have to worry about people like u guys going to them and beating the crap out of them now.
Actually, I don’t think ur even man enough to go up to any of them and tell them how u feel about their school cause u think u will be beaten up by all those scrawny little kids and they 20 lbs backpacks full of books.

And if your really going to waste your time bashing UHS then why don’t you just go to the front of UHS and make your views better known. Or maybe your just too scared. I don’t think you have the guts to tell it to their faces. And telling it to one of them or just a small group of them doesn’t get your message out. Go tell it to the school that you want them out. Bring it up to the board. If that’s what you really believe then maybe you should do something about it.

Brooke: Thanks for providing any evidence I’ve ever needed to prove that UHS is full of elitist jerks. The fact that you attended UHS does not mean you have more brains than anyone (as evident by your use of the word “are”), nor does it mean you will be more successful in life. For your information, I am in fact working towards my dream job, and I do in fact have the brains to go where I want and do what I want in life. And no, I didn’t have to “donate” to a “public” school to get here.
Also, working in the Emergency Room and saving several lives when you’re only one year out of high school sounds like a pretty big stretch to me.

Amanda: so maybe some of us do dress like nerds. But are rankings speak for themselves. At least we have the brains to go places and do the things we want. I’m doing exactly what I wanted to do with my life. My current major Chemical Engineering w/ an emphasis on Nanotechnology. Where am I taking that… well I am already accepted to the UCLA med program. One day I’m hoping to take the knowledge from my major and use it to cure diseases such as cancer. I already work in the hospital in the ER. I have saved several lives in my time there. Are you working toward your dream job? I know plenty of people that wish that they did things differently. Most of our students graduate UHS with at least a year of college finished. Some of us go into college with almost 3 years completed. Are students went to UHS to get ahead of the game. Thanks to UHS I don’t have to waste my time taking pointless classes in college. I am much closer to my career in medicine than the average student. I know for a fact that a UHS student can walk into a college class and have everyone thinking that they are a college student. I look young for my age. I get asked if I want the kid’s menu when I go to eat. On the other hand in every college class I took the students thought I was just another college student. They were all shocked to find out that I was in high school. I am not the only student that was mistaken for a college student. So if you are saying that we don’t fit in… we obviously do.

Brooke: If you genuinely believe that people attending other Fresno high schools are in any extra danger, then arguing with you would be like arguing with a doorknob. By the way, maybe you should watch or read the news, specifically the local section, as University High School was featured in it earlier this year. Are pedophile teachers more acceptable than the “gang shootings and stabbings” that you think happen at public schools?

Violence still exists in high schools in Fresno. One of my best friends was put in the hospital thanks to an incident at her school that she wasn’t even involved in. Anyone on campus who has seen those University high school students would see that they are the most socially inept kids in the world. That is what the high school attracts. It attracts all the socially rejects who couldn’t function in a normal high school. They dress like freakshows and you can tell that they are poor. Low class scum.

First of all, I went to UHS. When I saw this article, I couldn’t help but laugh really, really hard. Why? I laughed because many of the kids at UHS are simply socially retarded. In my opinion, they shouldn’t be allowed to use the public areas of Fresno State, such as the Student Union. First off, they don’t even pay student dues and secondly they run around acting retarded as if they were in the third grade.
And you are absolutely right that many of them will not go to Fresno State. Who would want to go there after being there for 4 years prior? And why go to a school that doesn’t have a name for itself when we have people going to ivy league colleges? Not to bash, but many of the students go to UHS because they want the college credit. And they do better in the classes they take in college than the actual college students taking the class. So they’re smart, academically. But they are completely retarded when it comes to being social. A case in point is the freshman that posted above saying they were in the elevator. What did they put as their name? “The supreme lord and the epitome of greatness.” How retarded. For any Fresno State student reading this, talk to your student representatives to have UHS students banned from places like the Student Union. Then you can stop complaining.

Frank: University High is not a private school, students who go there receive a public education. It is a charter school currently run through Fresno Unified, as is the IB program on Fresno High’s campus. No student’s parents ‘shelled out a few thousand dollars’ for them to attend, all the school requires of a student is passing grades and a music class. I know this as I attended UHS. I now am a student at Fresno State. What those kids did was immature, but i would like to point out that UHS is a high school on campus. At one point, where UHS currently resides there was an elementary school. Be glad you dont have 3rd graders running around. Sure, they should not have jumped in the elevator, but those elevators have stopped before for less. The first week the library opened they stalled while college students were in there. This was before the camera systems were in place. Who is to say those ‘mature’ college students didn’t jump in the elevator?

University students get to run free and abuse Fresno State, a college that they aren’t even likely to attend.
And Brooke, your private school student mentality disgusts me. At any Fresno high school there are no gang wars, and I (and everyone I’ve ever known) made it through public school just fine without getting shot or stabbed. Just because you were privileged enough to have your parents shell out a few thousand dollars for high school doesn’t mean you have to put down public education.

As a University High alumni I would just like to say that most of the students that attend UHS would be offended to be called “little kids”. We go to that school for a reason. We proved ourselves to be mature and beyond intelligent young adults that deserve to be educated on a college campus. High school students are not the only ones who act up at Fresno State, and we do far less damage.
UHS students are on that campus to learn too, and they deserve it just as much as you do. Don’t you remember what it was like to be a high school student learning your boundaries?
There was no permanent damage to the elevator, and I’m sure they did not just get away with it.
I’m also pretty sure that their mommies are proud of their students academic achievments, especially knowing that their students will go far in this world, well beyond their high school education at Fresno State.

I am an alumni of UHS. Am I ashamed to say that I attended UHS… No. These students are young adults just like everyone else was at one point in their lives. What everyone fails to see is that what these young adults have done is a far cry from what teens have done at other schools. At UHS there are no gang wars. There are no shooting, no cases of someone being stabbed, and no graffiti. Yeah sure there are times where one of the students may do something out of line, but there are consequences for their actions. These students are some of the brightest I know. They don’t have much in the way of sports, the electives are being turned almost completely academics. So if these students feel the need to rebel in some form or feel like they need to have some fun before they fully become an adult, then who is to blame them. At least the actions are not those of most high school students. I am not trying to say what they did was right, I am just asking that you look at the world before you judge these students.

And we have a high school on campus because….?
Thank goodness I was not having to use the library that day, because I would’ve been pissed, especially knowing that some immature little kids messed up a brand new elevator in a brand new library. Seriously little guys, find something else better to do with your time instead of giggling over all jumping at the same time. How about that homework that’s due soon? I guess your mommies gave packed too many sodas in your lunch that day. Haha.
I didn’t come to this school so i can have little kids causing problems from thoughtless actions. I am looking forward to the UHS being further away from the center of school 🙂 Nothing personals sorry, but just sayin.

Totally kidding about the wall. But I’m glad UHS students realize that they should not abuse their privileges that we as college students have to pay for. Lighten up kids, everyone makes mistakes, just make better judgments in the future.

As a fellow Freshman of UHS, it has been my dream to attend this prestigous school for many years! I’ve worked hard, made many mistakes, and helped those in need. I believe we should get over this “Elevator Mishap”. No one got hurt, and nothing was damaged(that i have heard). With all these worries and issues we’re making of it, we aren’t gonna be able to focus on our studies and do well. The Freshman that were involved are really sorry, and have appologized to everyone. Please find it in your heart to forgive the class of 2013 and those involved in the incident. Thank you for your time.

hey hey everyone.. i was one of the 10 UHS students on the elevator. We are extremely sorry for any inconvenience we must have caused one of the 4 cabs on the elevator. We had no malicious intents for the elevator or any UHS or CSUF students, and we all feel like complete morons for what happened. Although nothing broke and nobody was injured, we as a group would like to say that we feel like crap for what occured, and several of us cried today and were depressed about it. We offered to pay the school for any damage, and we will do whatver it takes to make things right for future students. Again, we are VERY sorry. thank you.

As a hardworking University High School student, I’m ashamed that some of my fellow freshman would cause such a mess. This type of behavior is unacceptable and sets an absolutely terrible example for us freshman and UHS in general. I did not take place in this act and would never dream of doing anything like this. The freshman class is getting together and 40 volunteers will approach the dean tomorrow to try to get UHS a better reputation with CSUF. Like “Bob” said only 10 out of the 140 freshman did this, and I don’t think any of the other 130 including me would eer dream of doing something like this.
We hope this will not dramatically affect our privileges and that we will still have the honor of being able to use the college’s resources.

Let’s understand that only 10, of the one hundred forty some freshmen at that high school did this act. They will most likely be justly punished, and we must respect those kids for their scholarly passion. Many kids I see are being studious and behaving quite above other kids of their age. Proper action against those 10 kids must be taken, but I do not condemn those not involved.
