Benicia teens say drugs becoming more accessible
BENICIA — From scoring fake IDs to getting in good with liquor store owners, Benicia teens are finding ways to get drugs and alcohol.
“If you really want to find it, it’s easy to find,” said Benicia High School junior Natalie Peterson, one of four student panelists at a substance abuse forum Monday night.
Benicia police and school officials have partnered for a series of nine such forums between now and May aimed at sparking a dialogue between parents and their teens.
Teen use of drugs like marijuana, alcohol and nicotine and, increasingly, opiates like Vicodin is becoming more common because of the easy access to them, panelist Jeremy Taubman said.
“Just one use can be problematic,” Taubman said.
Two Cal Poly students found drunk in other̢۪s homes
San Luis Obispo police report two young men were arrested, one Sunday morning and another Tuesday morning, for trespassing and public intoxication after they were found in other people’s homes.
Cal Poly Police Chief Bill Watton said there have been 85 arrests and citations on campus in the last week. He said that the numbers were running approximately 50 percent Cal Poly students and 50 percent young people from off-campus.
Former Cal Poly student Edward James Sladek, 22, was found in a residence on San Luis Drive at 7 a.m. Sunday. He identified himself to police as a Cal Poly student, but university officials say he graduated in the spring.
Sladek was intoxicated and unaware of where he was. He had reportedly tried to kick in the front door and then entered through another unlocked door.
Another Cal Poly student was found disoriented inside of a kitchen at the 400 block of Lincoln Street. When police arrived, they found Kyle Evan Logan, 19, unaware of his surroundings.
Both men were arrested on misdemeanor charges of trespassing and public intoxication.
