Twelve weeks have gone by since the end of the spring 2009 semester. Dozens of newsworthy events have happened over the summer, both locally and nationally.
June 2009
- June 8: The fourth floor of the Henry Madden Library, known as the Haak Center, officially opened for business.
- June 9: Leaders from the California State University Employees Union (CSUEU) met to discuss options in response to the projected budget cuts of $584 million.
- June 16: NykelBam International, LLC pledged $10 million to Fresno State Athletics. The CEO of the previously unknown company is Alphonso Bigelow, a former Fresno State football player and 1996 graduate of the Craig School of Business.
- June 19: Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger met with local officials in Mendota to discuss the dire situation of Central Valley farmers. Mendota is one of the many valley farm towns suffering from three years of drought.
- June 20: The third annual Fresno State Farm Festival was held at the Gibson Farm Market. The event featured wine tasting, farm products, live music and farm and winery tours.
- June 22: Children̢۪s author and artist Aliki donated 21 pieces of her work to the Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children̢۪s Literature. The center is part of the Henry Madden Library.
- June 24: The Lyles College of Engineering earned the prestigious nationwide HP Innovations in Education grant for $260,000.
- June 28:The CSU Summer Arts Program started its 24th year this summer. This is the 11th consecutive year the program has been held at Fresno State.
- June 28: The California Latino Water Coalition held a town hall meeting at the Satellite Student Union.
- June 29: The California State University system urged the California Faculty association (CFA) to vote on furloughs.
- June 1-31: The Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market set record sales for the month of June. Their sales were $220,000, up 15 percent from last June.
July 2009
- July 1: The cash-for-clunkers program began. The program allows people to trade in their cars for more “eco-friendlyâ€Â models, and receive a hefty rebate compliments of President Obama’s stimulus package.
- July 2: Chuck Harvey, an animator from Disney’s “Robin Hoodâ€Â and “Little Mermaid,â€Â lectured at Fresno State. Harvey was also an instructor and guest at this year’s CSU Summer Arts program.
- July 2: The Department of Water Resources gave a 100,000 acre-feet “water loanâ€Â to aid central valley farmers.
- July 6: Campus Pointe, the controversial new development on the east end of the Fresno State campus, opened its doors.
- July 7: The CSUEU agreed to furlough two days per month, without pay, for all of its employees.
- July 9: The CSU closes admissions at all campuses for Spring 2010. Admissions are expected to re-open for Fall 2010.
- July 14: NykelBam CEO Alfonso Bigelow made the first payment to the Fresno State athletic department. The check was for an undisclosed six-figure amount.
- July 21: CSU trustees increased enrollment fees for the second time this year, this time by 20 percent.
- July 22: A poll of 409 students, conducted by Fresno State professor Tamyra Pierce, showed that 84% percent students text while driving.
- July 23: Fresno State President Welty held a town hall meeting on campus to discuss his plans for dealing with the massive budget cuts.
- July 29: The CFA and APC both ratified their furlough agreements.
August 2009
- Aug 5: CSU Chancellor Charles Reed issues a message to students about fee increases.
- Aug 11: The California Latino Water Coalition and community activists gathered in Mendota and plead for Obama to visit water-starved farmlands.
- Aug 12: The NCAA stripped the Fresno State women̢۪s basketball team of their 2007-08 championship titles. Emma Andrews had signed a contract with an Australian professional team, the Dandenong Rangers, when she was 16.
- Aug 19: The yearly summer concert series, The Vans Warped Tour, came to Fresno.
