An unexpectedly large crowd of 3,000 turned out to watch the Bulldogs̢۪ spring scrimmage on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.
Discount merchandise was sold at the gate.
Rich folks ate lunch behind one of the end zones while the players sweated out their problems and troubles a few yards away.
All of this and the university didn̢۪t even have to get another team to show up. Pure marketing genius.
Media members from all the major outlets were stuffed together right in front of the band. The auditory blitz was employed to shut down their ability to stir the pot and express liberal bias.
The band sounded great by the way, and rumor has it they will be reunited with the student section next season. If so, it is probably because none of next season̢۪s games will sell out, but let̢۪s pretend it̢۪s for the fans, OK?
Meanwhile, the women̢۪s tennis team won their eighth straight conference title. Why did the gods of sport make football so popular?
Of course, most people came out to form an opinion on the quarterback controversy.
The offense won the game over the defense 86-31 using some convoluted scoring system. Derek Carr once fumbled on his own 30 yard line and the defense recovered. The next play the offense still had the ball at the same 30 yard line, only facing the other direction. The young freshman is learning fast. Next spring he plans to fumble at his own one yard line.
A left-handed quarterback wearing No. 15 tried to make everyone think he really was Tim Tebow, running and throwing so hard he once lost his shoe trying to push the pile.
Pat Hill kept up his laissez-faire attitude toward the quarterback situation, saying, “If we have to play more than one quarterback, that’s fine. We probably will. It’s good to have three that can play at this level. A lot of [teams] are trying to find one.â€Â
We should all be so satisfied with ourselves. In fact, don̢۪t even vote during the next election. Instead, be glad there are two candidates who think they should be president. A lot of countries are trying to find one!
But therein lies the problem; having two leaders never works. The reason so many teams are trying to find one quarterback is because one works better than two. Having two or three inevitably leads to division and inconsistency. Some players and coaches will prefer one guy, some will prefer the other. This undermines the very concept of a team.
Maybe that’s why Hill decided to let his quarterbacks get hit this spring for the first time ever. If one of the guys gets hurt then; ‘voila!’ Problem solved.
Why else would he change the policy? Hill is not a fan of big changes, as evidenced by his trademark mustache.
Maybe someone should suggest to Pat that he share his head coaching position for the first few games next year. After all, some teams are trying to find one coach.
In other words, a decision needs to be made as to who will start before the season begins. Hopefully Pat is gaming the media and churning the question through his mind daily. If not, expect a high turnout at next season̢۪s spring game, because we still might not know.
