In The Collegian’s Nov. 5 issue, there was an opinion made about the recent election that struck me as unnecessary and out of context. The statement about Obama just being a community organizer for his experience and referring to that as a “soup kitchenâ€Â job was offensive. As a student who is going into the not-for-profit sector, a comment like that should not be made by someone who does not understand the concept of a community organizer.
In the article “Obama’s Community Rootsâ€Â by David Moberg, writes that as Obama became a presidential candidate, he frequently referred to his community organizing, asking supporters to treat his campaign as a social movement in which he is just “an imperfect vessel of your hopes and dreams.â€Â This is important to understand because “weâ€Â are the ones that need to get together and make a change Obama is there to lead the way.
Another article titled “Community Organizerâ€Â written by John Maki, illustrates Obama’s work by making a powerful statement “as a community organizer, the sole source of your power is your relationships. And the more people you have in your pocket, the more likely it is that you can use them to get what your base wants.â€Â All Obama wanted to do is connect with as many people as he could to make a change in the future.

It was a response to the previous outburst, genius. Having a likeable president is not bad, but the lack of discourse and ‘off-limits’ nature of Obama from any who dare critique the man who will soon become the world’s most powerful figure, is shocking. I wonder if the hypersensitivity and such behavior will continue one or two years into his presidency. I, for one, am not buying into the hype. Prove something first. Obama showed us nothing as a senator, ran a good campaign, and has now become the contemporary Jesus? A little caution might help a smart guy lime you alumni.
What am I guarding against? Well let me put it this way. The Obama campaign webpage had at least 11 or 12 policy points where Jesus II would make an improvement on the current administration—–terrorism was not one of those points. The guy really never mentioned terrorism or the threat posed by Islamic fundamentalists in his entire campaign. Maybe the future of western civilization is what I’m guarding.

Bollocks—–community organizer doesn’t and shouldn’t translate to President of the United States after 3.5 years in the US Senate and failure to draft any legislation. Who are you,Maria De La Cruz, his Chief of Staff? His biographer? How do you know what he stands for or what his impact on this nation will be?
