The year’s third annual “SAGA: Women’s Arts & Music Festivalâ€Â will feature female talent in the forms of music, art, dance and spoken word, including poet Courtney Miller, among others.
The festival will take place at Fresno State̢۪s Maple Mall on Tuesday, October 9 and there is no charge for attendance.
“It’s a fun celebration of women’s culture,â€Â said Ashley Fairburn, member of People Organized for Women’s Empowerment and Representation (POWER) and co-coordinator for the event. “It’s cool to see the different art women can produce.â€Â
Fairburn, a women̢۪s studies and history double major, is the media spokesperson for the event.
Bands scheduled to perform include local as well as out-of-town groups. Local band Inflight Nymphs will be headlining and solo Fresno artist See You Soon will be playing as well. Three Chord Whore will be coming up from Bakersfield to play, and Riot Whore from Merced will also grace the stage.
“You often go to shows and only see bands made up of males,â€Â Fairburn said. “It’s a great opportunity to see what the other side creates.â€Â She esteemed the musical side of the festival and the barriers it could break. The bands’ sounds cover the genres of acoustic, indie, hip hop, post-punk and grunge.
Fairburn urges anyone that might be interested in getting involved with POWER and its future events to attend their weekly meeting.
“The meetings are held every Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in the Women’s Resource Center,â€Â she said. “It’s a great opportunity for everyone to get together.â€Â
