Several students have put together a petition for the impeachment of ASI President Mackee M. Mason and Executive Vice President Sandra Flores.
Former ASI presidential candidates Walter Ramirez and Oscar Perez, along with a few other students, are heading the group to petition for Mason and Flores̢۪ removal.
The petition asks for Mason and Flores to be removed for violations of ASI Bylaws and the Code of Conduct. Ramirez and Perez encourage students who agree with the removal to sign.
Mason and Flores admitted violating the “substance free pledgeâ€Â during the ASI retreat in July, where underage drinking took place. They are also involved in a lawsuit against ASI and California State University, Fresno, Association, Inc. claiming the wrongful termination of the former ASI executive director.
Perez said the group of students has been working on getting student signatures for the past week and will present the petition at today̢۪s ASI Senate meeting in USU 312 at 4 p.m.
Ramirez will present the petition to the senators and ask for the impeachment of Mason and Flores.
Ramirez said the goal is to put pressure on the Senate to “make the right decision.â€Â
“We need to keep representatives of ASI accountable for what they do,â€Â Ramirez, a senior political science major, said.
Although the Senate does not have to consider the petition as part of its decision, Ramirez said he wants to try to influence the Senate to vote Mason and Flores out of office.
“We want to influence the vote in the interest of the students,â€Â Ramirez said.
Lauren Johnson, vice president of finance and spokesperson for the Senate, said she is aware of the petition, but is not sure if all members of the Senate know about it. She said it is the Senate̢۪s job to represent the students.
“It’s their duty to do what the students want,â€Â Johnson said. “If a lot of students have signed the petition, I think the Senate will take that in to accountability.â€Â
Ramirez and Perez hope to collect at least 500 signatures, outweighing the number of student votes that got each Mason and Flores into office.
“We want to have more votes to get them out than they got [to get] in,â€Â Perez, a senior social work major, said.
As of Tues. afternoon, the students had about 400 signatures.
Mason was elected in April with 474 student votes.
The former candidates and their supporters have been passing the petition around campus and in their classes to collect signatures.
Ramirez said he has received mixed reactions to the petition. Some students don̢۪t know much about what is going on and others are supportive of Mason and Flores. However, Ramirez said that most students he talks to are willing to sign.
Although neither Perez nor Ramirez would have a chance to take office if Mason was removed, they believe Mason has not taken his job seriously.
“They knew what they were doing in office and they have made a joke out of the whole thing,â€Â Perez said.
Perez said he does not feel probation is suitable for what the two executives did.
“Probation means nothing,â€Â Perez said. “They should be removed from office.â€Â
Johnson said there is nothing in the ASI Bylaws about student petitions for impeachment. If the Senate does decide to vote on the issue and it does take action, there is a process, Johnson said.
There are three ways for executives to be removed from office including a two-thirds vote from the Senate, three or more absences from meetings or becomeing ineligible due to academic disqualification or disciplinary action taken by the university.
Johnson did not know what the Senate plans to do today. Johnson was unsure of what will happen next.
“It never gets to this point,â€Â Johnson said.

I WONDER , you are on the money!! the twenty dollars that is. BOBBY probably doesnt understand the meaning of the word ethics and that is why he has to shrink down the situation to the issue “for 20 dollars” because BOBBY you should read about the situation and read the ASI bylaws online let me help you heres the link : http://asi.csufresno.edu/documents.html
They clearly broke policies and rules. They also admitted it in their letters they posted which is weird to me but now they been taken off
you should think critically BOBBY about the seriousness about the underage drinking, the broken substance free pledge and the lawsuit, its not about the 20 dollars its about being an ethical leaderand the image placed upon fresno state.

Rey — I think that’s a little harsh. I do agree they need to be removed and action taken against them; but let’s keep it civil.

They need to be expelled from school as well as losing their positions. Their filth doesn’t need to contaminate Fresno State any longer. Their mothers should be ashamed of the losers that they created. They don’t exhibit the characteristics of students but rather of low life losers who need to be on Jerry Springer. While they are at it, lose some weight and get some plastic surgery you revolting subhuman beasts.

‘Bobby’ are you seriously that daft? Read Mary Grace’s comment under the opinion section of the paper. She really puts it into perspective.
I do have to question whether the senate will actually do anything anyway – considering one of the voting senators was drinking with Mason and Flores at the retreat. Looks like it might prove to be a conflict of interest for him.
Just because they are all students involved in the alcohol drinking at the retreat doesn’t give them a free pass.
If it had been a staff person – no matter the age – they would have been fired.

Petition? For 20 dollars? Nobody on the collegian staff finds it weird that the person who lost has a petition going? Sounds like more sore losers.
20 dollars people, and just like someone put on these boards, they didnt actually break any policies!
The thing about petitions is that they can tell students whatever they want to get them to sign. People keep talking about all these horrible things Mason and Flores has done, maybe the media is responsible for overkill, what are they supposed to think when the collegian sees that people actually are reading their tabloid now, so they put the same stories everyday because if they did not put anything else in the paper, 1) People would have a chance to see that 20 dollars and not stopping underage drinkers is NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL! 2) The collegian would have to get back to its boring reporting
I guess the collegian should report Bigfoot sightings next if its going to be a full blown tabloid!
The fact that the collegian and walter are putting pressure on the senate should not sway the senate most students dont care!
This will probably be erased, and this will never show up in the response section in print.

you know, the funny thing is i used to see those adds around the campus about Fresno state students drinking less than anyone else. it always sounded funny to me since I knew that’s not true; and now this mess. the next time i see one of those posters I’m gonna throw it in the trash.
I think they should resign immediately or get thrown out.
oh and please let us know where we can sign that petition.

I am very happy that someone has started this. Its repulsive that the Senate hasn’t taken action yet, and I hope this holds them accountable to the students. They need to act today and remove Mason and Flores. They’ve done enough damage.
