One of ASI̢۪s new programs is beginning to make a few rumblings at Fresno State.
WHY1509? is a new campaign organized by Associated Students, Inc. to get Fresno State students more involved with the upcoming Presidential election Nov. 4.
“[WHY1509?] is our new voter registration program,â€Â ASI President Mackee Mason said. “We’ve already gotten a great response.â€Â
Volunteers and ASI senators are working together on the campaign, hoping to make a positive impact on Fresno State students.
One of the main components of the WHY1509? campaign is to get more students registered to vote.
“So far we have 45 voting forms from students,â€Â ASI Senator Sarait Martinez said. “[WHY1509] is something we are working on so we can educate our students.â€Â
Martinez explained that so far, 85 more students are interested in the campaign.
So far, very little information about the WHY1509? campaign is available. At the last ASI meeting on Wednesday, ASI Senator Craig Parks voiced his concern about the campaign and pleaded with the ASI Senate for more assistance.
“It’s a very massive campaign, and we need leadership,â€Â Parks said. “If you have time, we need it.â€Â
Still, the campaign is in its early stages.
The plan for WHY1509?, in its current phase, is to build up interest. Currently there is no explanation available about what the name of the campaign means, or when the public will find out.
“Right now we’re doing the buildup for [WHY1509] and beginning to market the ideas,â€Â Parks said. “I can tell you that Why1509? is a comprehensive student voting program that we’re working on.â€Â
The campaign is running out of time. Students interested in registering to vote should know that the deadline to register in California is Monday, Oct, 20.
According to Parks, ASI is still recruiting volunteers and is hoping to get the campaign rolling next week.
“It’s going to be a powerful movement,â€Â Parks said. “WHY1509? is going to show that students can make a difference.â€Â
