There are two dangerous Propositions on the November ballot that I think are incredibly important to Californians, Props 4 and 8. The two propositions seek to amend the California State Constitution to drastically shrink the protections granted to us under the law. Proposition 4 would require that all minors seeking to end a pregnancy must notify their parents. Parents rightfully want to be involved in their children’s lives, but not all teens live in homes where communication is possible. In the real world Proposition 4 is dangerous and will cause teens to delay medical care, seek unsafe procedures, or worse. Californians including every major medical association and the California Teachers Association have already said NO to these laws in the past because they recognize these laws leave our most vulnerable teens at risk.
Proposition 8 will change the California Constitution to eliminate the right to marry for same sex couples. Domestic Partnerships are not the same as a civil marriage. The law must treat all people equally. Opposing proposition 8 will show that Californians will not stand for discrimination against anyone in our community.
What it comes down to is this: Propositions 4 and 8 fundamentally undermine fairness, equality and safety, and allows the government too much say in personal decisions. That’s why this year students from CSUF are working to STOP these agendas. Look for us on campus, encouraging young voters to Get Up and Vote Down Props 4 and 8!
