University officials and members of ASI Senate are reviewing documents
The university is examining financial documents to determine whether or not ASI President Mackee M. Mason misused student funds.
Cynthia Teniente-Matson, vice president for administration and chief financial officer, is reviewing ASI documents including credit card receipts and expense forms, according to Paul Oliaro, Ph.D., vice president of student affairs.
“The university has obligations to make sure funds are being properly spent,â€Â Oliaro told The Collegian on Thursday.
Oliaro announced at the ASI Senate meeting Wednesday that no fraud or theft has been found up to this point. He said in a phone interview Thursday that the documents are still being reviewed by Teniente-Matson and that all policies have been followed.
Teniente-Matson is out of her office until Monday and cannot be reached for comment.
Oliaro said Thursday the ASI Senate will also look at the documents and take action if needed.
Lauren Johnson, vice president of finance and elected spokesperson for the ASI Senate, said that the documents are being compiled for review.
An ad hoc committee consisting of some members of the Senate and some people outside of ASI, including financial experts, will conduct the review, Johnson said.
“A thorough review will be done,â€Â Johnson said. “They will be examined from year to year to compare spending patterns.â€Â
Johnson said the Senate is reviewing ASI credit card policies. Because of the ambiguous wording in the policy, Johnson said, the Senate may no longer issue ASI credit cards.
“Whether or not we want to keep credit cards is up in the air,â€Â Johnson said.
Johnson said ASI has made mistakes, adding that the Senate is doing everything it can to rectify the situation.
The ASI Senate has put Mason and Sandra Flores, ASI executive vice president, on probation for violating the “substance free pledgeâ€Â while on an ASI leadership retreat in Southern California in July.
The terms of the probation consist of indefinite freezing of their executive credit cards and immediate dismissal by the Senate if Mason or Flores violate any other bylaws.
“This is a temporary solution at the very least, until the Senate gets more information,â€Â Johnson said.
Although Johnson was unable to specify which members of ASI attended the retreat in July where underage drinking took place, she said that there were 15 members in attendance.
Johnson did not attend the ASI retreat because she was attending to family matters.
Even though Johnson was not at the retreat, the Senate felt she was the best person to represent them regarding the situation, she said.
“I had known about the allegations before the majority of the Senate,â€Â Johnson said. “They felt I had adequate background and felt comfortable enough talking about the situation.â€Â
The names of the underage ASI members who consumed alcohol during the ASI retreat have not been disclosed to anyone, including the Senate, Johnson said.
To her knowledge, the only people who might know the identity of those in attendance are Carolyn Coon, Ph.D., assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of students, and Gary Nelson, student activities adviser.
Johnson said the names have not been disclosed because of student confidentiality rules. She also said that the names will be released eventually and the Senate will then take appropriate action.
In accordance to the ASI Code of Conduct, if an ASI member is not of legal drinking age, he or she must refrain from alcohol consumption while attending school-related or ASI-sponsored events.
If this code, or any other, is violated, section 11 of the ASI Code of Conduct states that the “status of any member who acts in violation of any section of this code will automatically be put to a vote of the Senate upon receiving one week prior notice.â€Â
The code goes on to say that “if two-thirds of the senators then in office vote in the affirmative that the member did, in fact, violate this code, he or she shall be immediately removed from office.â€Â
Although no further action was taken at Wednesday̢۪s ASI meeting, a closed session was held to discuss the situation.
Johnson said that since the closed session was called during the meeting, no action was made, in accordance to procedures.
The Senate will not make any other decisions regarding Mason and Flores until the next ASI meeting, which is scheduled for Oct. 1. Johnson said that there will likely be a special meeting called before then to discuss the matter.
“I know that the Senate is deeply considering the issue with their constituencies in mind,â€Â Johnson said.

Anthony, the fact that they might have a bias against Mason and Flores is all the more reason for them to talk. At least Mason and Flores would be able to communicate what really happened, rather than allowing others to spew whatever exaggerations and falsities they may have. Remaining silent only conveys their guilt to us, and makes us think that they have even more to hide. I’d like to hear their side. Perhaps it isn’t as big of a deal as everyone is making it, but those people who exaggerate things are the ones who are heard. So, like I said earlier, talk or resign.
And if it is something too embarrassing to talk about, then it is something that warrants resignation.

1. Kaitlan is a loser.
2. I agree with Barack, both should step down. Man up and get this over.
3. Students drink and drive, underage drink, and do worse. Lets not pretend this is the
first case ever.
4. If University funds are so important why aren’t we talking about the real issues:
The Stacy Johnson-Klein millions. Welty should have been fired!

Given the lawsuits faced recently by CSU Fresno, I don’t think they would terminate a woman without a LEGITIMATE reason. Annie Tremp must be extremely guilty of something to have been fired given Stacy Johnson Klein, and that Volleyball coach. ASI can’t comment on why they terminated Tremp, but if it goes to court, which I’m sure it will (Defense attorneys get paid hourly, whether they win or not), the truth will come out then. I’m guessing she embezzled funds, or perhaps was the one who purchased the alcohol. Don’t you think it’s funny how Tremp’s husband was extremely vocal at the last senate meeting (KSEE 24)?

Mason and Flores either need to resign or stop acting so damned guilty! They look more guilty than a little boy who’s been discovered wearing his mother’s lipstick by his father! Mackee and Sandra, if you want to regain any kind of trust, you need to talk to us, and the Collegian is your outlet. Some students think you purchased the alcohol that was consumed on the retreat with student fees. Dispel the accusations of misusing student fees and own up to the fact that this matter only concerns the stealing of a few underage senator’s innocence. Bill Clinton lied to us about Monica Lewinsky and is still loved by many. Start talking or just resign.

After reading the Collegian today I have come to realize what a joke it is. This article presents the same information as the article printed the previous day, just re-worded. The Collegian obviously has a bias against Mr. Mason and they are doing whatever it takes to make him look bad. Mr. Mason obviously does not want to give an interview to the Collegian because what would be the positive of that? It does not matter how he answers the questions in the interview, the Collegian would twist his words and work hard to discredit him. The only thing the Collegian is focusing on is the one mistake that he has made which he is taking full responsibility for. The Collegian does not focus on the many positive things he has done in office. He personally got me to care about what goes on at Fresno State. He has been working hard on the WHY 1509 campaign and has been pushing hard for Fresno State Students to go green. He also devotes countless hours to Fresno State working hard to make it a better campus. Also, this is just my opinion but I think that it is very “fishy” that Walter, the man who finished second behind Mr. Mason in the voting for the presidency, is leading this assault against Mr. Mason. I sense a little bit of jealousy. As for the students personally attacking Mr. Mason and Ms. Flores by calling them “Scum” and that they are a waste of breathable air I feel sorry for you. Dropping to the level to insult them in that was is pathetic. They are both normal human beings and do not deserve to be treated like that. Criticism is a good thing and I respect other people opinions but there is no excuse for treating another person like that. Those are actions of a low life human being.

You guys are all messed up. Annie has never been anything but GOOD to those students. She has done her best to be fair and kind to them – always. She has been helpful, supportive and sensitive to all of the students she has worked with or supervised.
And you know that.
They chose to side with the executives so they could cover their butts – and to keep their jobs.
What do they have to lose? Nothing!
She has had to sit by and watch as a bunch of snotty nosed, power hungry kids try to ruin her life. They are lying to cover up their own infractions.
Have any of you stopped for even a second to consider what is at stake here?
She is losing the job/career that she so very much loved; she has lost her income, her retirement, her health care benefits, her kids security; and for what?
Just so a few bent out of shape student assistants won’t lose their positions at ASI (which are temporary at best).
Do any of you feel the least bit of remorse for putting her through any of that.
She has kids your age and I know for a fact they would never do that to one of your parents; they would never lie to deliberately destroy a woman’s career.
Mackee and Sandra brought this on themselves; and the student assistants that have lied to hurt and damage her are just as bad as they are.
I have witnessed her interactions with you all; and so have many others. Once again, you know as well as I do that she has been kind to you all. She does not deserve this.
You should all be ashamed of yourselves. Your parents SHOULD have raised you better.
Annie HAS raised her kids better.
Take a minute to stop and really think about what this means; the hurt and damage you are causing.
What you are trying to do is wrong – plain and simple.
Once again, you should all be ashamed of yourselves.

TheLegalProfsMind brings up one of the two big issues that have been ignored.
1. They broke the law. How has the senate (and The Collegian) not made this a bigger deal? As representatives of the student body they should be held to a higher standard.
2. Annie Tremp. She was apparently forced out for bringing up these issues of misconduct.
As The Collegian reported,
“Tremp claims that Mason worked to discredit her in order to keep the situation under wraps.
‘I reported the misuse and the next thing I knew, Mackee shut down the office for a week and I was being investigated,’ Tremp said.”
“According to Tremp, Adishian-Astone put Tremp on paid administrative leave at Mason’s discretion. Tremp said she might lose her position.
Tremp told The Collegian that she is no longer on paid leave and has been given an ultimatum. “Basically, it’s either I take the severance package they are now offering me or else I get fired,â€Â Tremp said.”
This is absolutely outrageous if it is indeed true. It brings up many other issues. Mackee Mason obviously knew he did something wrong and tried to cover it up. Why is Tremp losing her job for doing her job? Why does Mason have discretion over a university employee? I don’t understand how this hasn’t been reported on more. There are so so many unanswered questions.
Like the saying goes, “The cover up is worse than the crime.”
If the members of ASI take themselves seriously, and would like ASI to be taken seriously, Mason and Flores should be voted out if they don’t resign.

Wow. This is absolutely disgusting. If they look at the Code of Conduct, anyone who violates state or federal law is subject to immediate dismissal. Both Mackee and Sandra violated state law and local statutes, as proven in their letters of admission of guilt.
California Business and Professions Code, Section 25658, states “Except as otherwise provided in subdivision (c), every person who sells, furnishes, gives, or causes to be sold, furnished, or given away, any alcoholic beverage to any person under the age of
21 years is guilty of a misdemeanor”
It goes on to state that “Except as provided in paragraph (3), any person who violates subdivision (a) by furnishing an alcoholic beverage, or causing an alcoholic beverage to be furnished, to a minor shall be punished by a fine of one thousand dollars ($1,000), no part of which shall be suspended, and the person shall be required to perform not less than
24 hours of community service during hours when the person is not employed and is not attending school.”
Full text of the law can be found at http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/cacodes/bpc/25657-25667.html
Mackee and Sandra have also violated the California State University Code of Student Conduct (Title V, Division V, Chapter I, Subchapter IV, Article II, § 41301 of the California Code of Regulations), which states that “distribution of alcoholic beverages (except as expressly permitted by law and University regulations), or public intoxication while on campus or at a University related activity” is subject to campus disciplinary action.
See http://weblinks.westlaw.com/Find/Default.wl?DB=CA-ADC-TOC%3BRVADCCATOC&DocName=5CAADCS41301&FindType=W&AP=&fn=_top&rs=WEBL8.09&vr=2.0&spa=CCR-1000&trailtype=26&Cnt=Document
While it is obviously not legal for minors (those under the age of 21) to purchase alcohol, in California it is not illegal for them to drink or be in possession of alcohol if they are in a private, non-public location — it is only illegal for those who are providing it.
So…why are they now focused on the people who were served (and didn’t violate the law), and are blatantly ignoring those who have admitted to being guilty of a misdemeanor.
All this and we haven’t even talked about the allegations of misuse of funds — this is just what they publicly admitted to.
This is revolting and these two should be dismissed or resign immediately.

Are you kidding me???? Just get rid of these two abominations. They don’t deserve their positions, and should be kicked out of school. Just look at their pictures. Bwahahaha. In some ways, I guess you can’t blame them for their horrible judgement and putrid character. Ugly both on the inside and especially on the outside. Get some plastic surgery you two losers. I am sure you can misuse more funds that the students who go to Fresno State who aren’t majoring in Becoming a Criminal gave to the school. What a waste of space and breathable air. Revolting.
