It didn̢۪t really matter to me how the Bulldog football team fared against Wisconsin.
Don̢۪t take me the wrong way, I showed up at the game with the same Bowl Championship Series (BCS) dreams that everyone else had before kickoff Saturday night.
I even expected the Bulldogs to pull the upset and jump in the Top 25 polls, so the game itself did matter to me and to the other 42,000 fans that packed Bulldog Stadium.
But, what was not going to change no matter the outcome was my opinion of head coach, Pat Hill. It would take a lot more than one game to change my mind.
Pat Hill is the best head coach in college football.
He is not the best just because he̢۪s the coach of my school̢۪s team or because he has a wicked-awesome mustache.
He is the best coach in college football because he does so much more than any BCS coach without the resources and advantages the marquee schools have.
He has the courage to take on any team in college football and has never backed down from a fight in his 12 years with the program.
Hill and his “Anyone, Anywhere, Anytimeâ€Â philosophy have elevated the Fresno State Bulldogs from a mediocre Western Athletic Conference school to a team regularly ranked in the Top 25.
His teams have been knocking on the door of the BCS even when the porch light isn̢۪t on.
Since the turn of the century, Pat Hill̢۪s Bulldogs have defeated 13 BCS schools and been on national television 57 times. Pretty nice for a school in the same conference as Idaho.
Those numbers look nice on paper, but Hill has truly built the program on principles that he changes for no one. The guy does not follow the trends of college football; he sets them.
When hired on in 1997, Hill said that a program he coached would accomplish three major goals and the rest would take care of itself.
His program was going to be based on academics, local recruiting and bringing “Big- Timeâ€Â football to the Valley.
Hill, along with assistant head coach John Baxter, has implemented the Academic Game Plan (AGP), a program designed by Baxter to keep players on track to graduate and be prepared for life after football.
The AGP has helped Fresno State become one of the strongest academic football programs on the West Coast, right behind schools like Stanford and Air Force.
Hill and his coaching staff have recruited up and down the state of California, partly because there is not enough money in the program to fly on recruiting visits.
The recruiting budget is a little bit different for coaches like Pete Carroll or Les Miles.
Currently on the roster, the Bulldogs have seven players from out of state. That is seven out of 99.
And finally, Hill’s version of “Big-Timeâ€Â football — No. 10 Wisconsin against No. 21 Fresno State. Yes it was a loss, but it was the biggest game ever in Fresno.
Not this year —–— ever.
That night and plenty others have been known to draw a crowd. All 10 of the Top 10 recorded crowds at Fresno State football game have all been under Hill.
He stuck to his guns and look where it got him. He has grown his fair share of gray hairs along the way, but his team is known around the country as a giant-killer and teams like Kansas State are too afraid to play the Bulldogs.
He has been so successful, that since 2000 his Bulldogs have won the 10th-most games in college football. Not the WAC or the West, but all of Division 1 football.
No matter how much good he has done or how much credit he deserves, Hill has never gone around beating his chest or telling anyone how good he is.
Maybe it̢۪s time that people start to realize how much Hill has done not only for a football team, but an athletic department, a university and a community.
As for me, I̢۪ll take Pat Hill anywhere, anytime and over anyone else. After all, he is the best coach in college football.

Pat Hill is a joke, Run, run pass, punt is his idea of an offensive gameplan. After twelve years of failure, it is time for a new head coach to lead the program. His vomit-inducing offense is disgusting.

As a long time Beaver fan I can say that I respect Pat Hill quite a bit. The second best Beaver vs Anyone game I’ve seen was at Fresno St. There was hard hitting plays on both sides, and although Fresno St came up the victor the game itself was a marvel to watch.
Given Coach Hill’s success I assume other schools with bigger budgets have requested interviews with him. It shows me how loyal he is to the Valley that he has either declined to meet with the other schools or declined their offers. Loyalty is a wonderful thing, and it is perhaps the biggest reason I have respect for the man.
I’d love to see Oregon State and Fresno State renew their rivalry.
