Looking for something fun to do with your friends this summer without breaking anyone̢۪s wallet? Just by being students at Fresno State, you don̢۪t have to look any further than the University Student Union.
A hidden treasure trove of student discount offers that range from places like Magic Mountain, Disneyland, Wild Water Adventures and all of the Regal Cinemas in Fresno provide every opportunity for students to have a good time.
With student discount prices at $26 compared to $39.99 through the park for a day pass to Six Flags Magic Mountain, or a two-day pass to Disneyland at just $128 compared to a $132 two-day park-hopper pass from the park, having fun is more affordable.
Jenea Cox is a student employee at the University Student Union information booth, and said that the hottest sellers are tickets for the FAX monthly buss passes at $35 and the movie passes at $6.75.
“We sell a lot of movie tickets on Fridays and right before holidays. These really are great deals, and a lot of people don’t realize that we have these kinds of discounts,â€Â Cox said.
Compared to the general admission at Regal Cinemas, such as Edwards 21 Cinemas at River Park at $10 per movie, your significant other could actually afford to get a soda and popcorn during the next date.
Jeff LaRose, a senior music major was unaware of how great the student discounts were.
“I have never used them before, but I had heard a little bit about them,â€Â LaRose said. “I think if they were more promoted around campus, then I would have had a better idea of what they were selling.â€Â
The refreshing concept about the student discounts on these tickets is that the university only makes a small profit because they make annual contracts with the companies they promote and buy their tickets in bulk. Mehrzad Zarrin, the associate director of the University Student Union, said that they don̢۪t even promote these deals outside of the campus because they are specifically for Fresno State students.
“What made this happen was mainly that Fresno State saw other universities giving student discounts, such as Cal State Fullerton, and liked the idea of giving students a break so they could still enjoy fun activities and save some money,â€Â Zarrin said. “We carry offers for the same places all year, including summer, and as long as students are buying the tickets we can continue to sell them.â€Â
The information booth also promotes student-run events such as Amateur Comedy Night, which benefits the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and the Finals Cram Jam, which is starting on May 11th and lasts through May 15th.
Freshman Dayna Waterworth discovered the discounted tickets early in the year, when she was going to the movies with friends.
“At the beginning of the year, I bought a bunch of tickets at the information booth for the movies. You just save so much money. I also bought a ticket for the Yosemite National Park trip back in April,â€Â Waterworth said. “It was worth the savings.â€Â
