Last year̢۪s ASI election saw only 494 voters, a drop from the 1,398 voters in the 2006 election. Do you think this year will have a larger turnout? Do you plan on voting?

Mike Gish—–the ballot proposition should be fair and balanced. Why should students front the bill for AS senators to push their pet issue? Let the issue decide itself and students to assess the argument for themselves.

Kimbo — why would you say that ASI “mis-used” funds to print pro-IRA flyers? The Senate voted and supported the organization…this would make that expense appropriate as it was a directive to the Senate, who ultimately has authority over all of ASI’s operatiuons. And what would there be to investigate on the three quotes?
Your comments are absurd…

INVESTIGATE ASI’s misuse of funds to print pro-IRA fee increase flyers!!! The three students who loaned their quotes to these flyers (in all of today’s campus newspapers ) and if campus xerox machines were used.

Well see since you talking like this makes me feel like you are more concerned in what happens. ha ha fluff answers well ill tell you i never heard this word till i came here and its easy for me to say oo i’m here for the people and it so easy for me to be like come together but what makes those things fluff. I’m not trying to say that things wi put meaning behind all things i do. and i plan to show it.
He let me know that parking honestly isnt the most feasible issue…how about we make the metered parking green everywhere on campus but we will also have to check with faculty so we don’t interfere with there CBA, so we do need to work together to do the best we can. While with parking structures i was told where they would want to put it,but also we need to meet with people who represent the faculty to see what the best plan of action is so we all benefit from these issues. so i don’t think i am riding on the coat tails because these are great issues that need to be addressed i am not bound to anyone but the students at the university. To actually have more parking we are going to have a parking increase that is the hard truth so where will the money come from? more than likely the students. we need to set up something where it is possible to raise money, get some kind of help to pay for this, either it be through a payment plan for students or pay in full.
There are no easy answers and i’m not gonna say oo i am keep everythings down because as you can see price of gas is so high right now that everything else will be high with an economy hurting what is the best plan of action? i would like to see more funding to help us. do i think i am in a position to make this happen of course or else i wouldn’t have out my hat out there in the race.
I will tell you this haha having those peoples butts in the stands are a great thing for school morale so i don’t think you should ever say that , thats not important i understand you want to know who you are voting for and as long as you come at me with a respectable tone then i will sit and blog in a calm manner.
I do have the drive to push for our students because i know you all know who have served it is not no easy job to do what ASI does. i will show you respect for the fact that you “did work ” haha and take that with the utmost respect.
I see there are pros and cons in even the IRA increase do i endorse it yes i do because i do see the funding that really isn’t there for some sports. DO i think its right that a majority will probably go to football? No i don’t, i see how wrestling was just thrown out because it wasn’t a cash cow that isn’t the only reason but it was one.
I do know jack about what i’m talking about if you don’t think so and i have not said enough to convince you then i’m sorry and hope you vote for someone who actually blogged on here, oo wait it was pretty much only mackee and i ha ha.
I also do believe that i am a candidate to be the students voice if some don’t think so that their opinion and they are welcome to have that.
I will say this to people only complain when its to late, the fee increases for tuition are not easy either but it can also start at the state capital where they want to cut funding so start talking now how can tuition go from 1800-3500 in a matter of 7 years? their will be increases but lets make them less severe not a 10% they want to increase by next year.
sorry for such bad grammar but i’m not a writer haha i’m better talking in person
thank you

I’m trying to be part of the solution by making making sure I don’t vote for someone who thinks they can run for senate and win by giving fluff answers and asserting platitudes like school spirit and unity. Sure, all thatt stuff sounds great on paper, but spare me your hot air. Give me some specifics.
You never answered my question about how you would handle the parking situation. Instead, you deferred to Mr. Mason, saying you would follow his lead. Excuse me Mr. Saldana, but my decision to vote for a president will be separate from my decision to vote for senators. You are just riding his coattails.
Tell me whether or not you would make students pay increased parking fees.
Tell me whether or not you would let faculty make use of any parking structure.
The latter is important Mr. Saldana, because if faculty does get to use it, then it becomes a question of whether the CFA will agree to fund it in part.
You might know that if you read up on the issues.
These are important topics, and the last thing students need is another senator who knows jack about the issues and goes forward thinking it’s all about increasing attendence at football games and giving students free ipods.
I already served Mr. Saldana. I tried my best to protect student rights, be it making it easier for them to receive funding for organizatiosn or advocating against fee increases.
I am not running again because I am graduating. And i didn’t serve this year because I thought it was time for someone else to serve, to get a chance. Apparently I was mitaken to believe there was a plethora of qualified candidates out there.

ha! funny thing you ask about what I’ve done, Leonard. You really have no idea how involved I am, that’s why I’m so skeptical. lol I don’t need to defend myself because I’m not running for senate (once again as I’ve already served). But let me just say, I’ve organized and planned a good percentage of the events that take place at Fresno State. And why? Because I want to bring everything I can to the Fresno State students. And I wasn’t complaining, I just pointed out that you have bad grammar and spelling hahahaha

ok well first off I will say this out of pretty much everything I had said you pulled that out, which is fine I have no problem letting people know that I al beyond confident to know I am qualified.
Im involved with redzone and am very proud to be and to attack that is ok I have no problem with that, I will defend myself, and the group. I am not going to argue on this to be honest I stayed nuetral in the arguements and told the students to come together.
Are any of these students who say I am embarressed to be a Fresno state student doing anything but complaining? As for my grammar and spelling haha go ahead and say what you’d like I carry myself higher than that, if you dont vote for me that is fine haha go ahead because I am planning to do more than those who argue against me.
If you all really want to do something spread the word go out and vote let your voice be heard because to argue on here is laughable
To Mr. Morris
My loyalties lay more with the university and its students than one person. Run again if you would like to do something more, you can question where instant but you don’t know me well enough to really say aything besides what you have read …oo as well as this just because you were on the senate doesn’t mean a whole lot to me
because we are facing these issues now where are you to try and help and for the grammar and spelling go ahead haha because if its such an easy shot why do you think I’m not bothered by those dumb comments. Argue my drive or motivation not grammar haha. In using my phone to respond to you not my computer which I so rely to correct all my gramtical mistakes haha. Be a bigger person and see the issues at hand instead of being a GOOD ex senator and insulting me because I’m trying to make a difference. Why don’t you try to help. Be apart of the solution instead of the problem.
I will say this again do more than talk go vote and let your voice be heard students of Fresno State
Thank you

Phillip Morris, I think you’re right on the money, to be honest.
Leonard Saldana, I’ll vote for you when you get your grammar and spelling right. Until then I don’t care about the flare.
And Tony…seriously? lol
and Hector, two things: just because the senate voted to SUPPORT Tuition Relief NOW it doesn’t mean it has to hold your hand into spreading the word. We’re all adults, you can do some work for yourself. Second, you’re right that someone from the senate reached out to you, too bad you canceled because of a convenient “conflict”.
Honestly, I’m embarrassed that these are my fellow students. It’s disgusting. “Healthy dialogue ” is not whining and complaining.
My goodness. I’m actually ashamed to be associated with Fresno State students now.

“I deserve to be on the senate”
No one running for office deserves anything. Sure, a candidate can be qualified, experienced, and ready to set in motion their ideas, but to say that you deserve a seat on this board tells me that you are doing this less for the students and more for your personal satisfaction.
Further, how can passing out t shirts and raffling off keychains entitled you to a seat? The idea that REDZONE prepares one for office is laughable. What is there to do besides show up to the game, cheer every touchdown, and get drunk afterward, if not before. Is REDZONE scheduling football games? Is REDZONE making travel arrangements for the football team? No, the Athletic department does that. What logistics are there?
I can speak from experience, being a former Senator myself. Let me ask you, have you even been to a Senate meeting?
When clubs and organizations are requesting funding and there is a controversy over how it was properly turned it, the last thing that matters are the RAH RAH RAHs and “That’s another Fresno State FIRST DOWN!” Following the organization bylaws to a T, being fair and equitable, that is what matters. It sounds to me your loyalties lay more with Mr. Mason than the institution itself.
A good Senator must be willing to challlenge his friends and colleagues for the sake of what is right. I only hope that you can.

well the book fees i would try and help institute a rental plan like many others are trying to do work with instructors to ask why do we have to have new editions. every semester right? many other university’s have warehouses where they rent out books for an even lower fee
as for parking one of my friends also running had make point that in the master plan their are suppose to be 4 parking structures to be added in this master plan. if you have more to ask ask mackee mason and believe me mackee will be president and i will damn sure support him in his cause to make change i bring my own things the only thing is that we want the same thing so why should i have to tell you what you already know? why we are running… im not piggy backing onto anyones campaign i have my own and my goals first is to start off and get really introduced to it. if i missed anything let me know i will be gladly go into more detail
ask mackee why i should be into the senate why i have worked on the redzone leadership board trying to make school spirit even higher than last year and i believe we have go to the football games and the giveaways we do so i know i deserve to be on the senate if you dont think so ask other candidates what they want to do

Mr. Saldana,
Please tell me then, why should I vote for you?
What will you specifically do about book feess and parking?
You asked who wants to see more done about those issues.
I certainly do.
Earn my vote. Tell me your plan. Are you going to make the students pay for a parking structure? How much of a fee increase would that require? Will faculty be able to use it? If so, will they be paying for the structure as well? How do you expect the CFA (teacher’s union) to agree to that?
Where is the best location? By the business building, next to the softball field? Use ag land? How would you convice the College of Agriculture to agree?
Answer me those questions, sir. Prove your worth to the Senate.

First of all i am running for ASI for Senator and i did it because i wanted to make a difference. If so many people have a problem with how things are ran why dont they run as well. People who have love for their school should do something and become a leader. There are so many that will criticize those in office but please if you dont like it let your voice be heard and run or have someone that you think can do a better job run. We are here to work with you i would never say im here to work for u…we are a team
We are all students that are concerned with the same problem. If you dont like the IRA increase then vote no on it but i think compared to other csu’s we dont pay anything. We have a sports great program with a great academic program as well, more money means more thngs right haha. I know many people might not want to joke but come on i dont think we should all get to testy blogging back and forth. Many can say alot of things but doing something is alot different right?
If elected i hope to work with the students and try and solve the problems we are all facing so instead of getting upset at each other work together. Politics will always get everyone in an argument but lets further our careers here and do something to make it better.
I just hope those who dont like what either erik or mackee said actually go out and vote and if you agree then vote!!! but believe me im almost posivtive that the IRA increase will happen because many of the student athletes will vote in favor of more money haha…let your voice be heard do something …..
dont talk about it be about it…
many will say that erik insulted the people but i dont think so he has his own opinions whats wrong with that, does it make you better for pretty much insulting him back? Believe me it is an unpaid position and takes an enormous amount of time but we dont do this because it makes us popular haha we do this for the students because if you cant do it then who will?
What are you do many of the people running dont just have tuition on our minds also book fees and parking who wants to see more done about that?

I don’t hate the Senate. I do dislike it though when our elected representatives insult their constituents, questioning their intelligence and the facts they base their decisions on. That is my reason.
Am I suppose to just take everything our elected officials say at face value? Should I not think on my own? Dare I not disagree? God forbid we actually have some debate around here.
Democracy ain’t easy folks. Compromise is gut-wrenching, it requires you to sacrifice beliefs while still holding on to principle.
The most important component of that is DISCUSSION OF THE ISSUES and QUESTIONING THE MOTIVE OF YOUR LEADERS. The latter is such an inherent part of voting. Research! Learn!
They will be better for it. We will too.

GM is right on the money. Diminishing the opinions of regular students is the most un-representative thing you can do.
I am tired of these elected (barely) leaders (ha!) telling us we are not informed on the issues, that our views are in someway less because we are not sitting where they are sitting.
Maybe I didn’t run for ASI because I didn’t have time to commit to a unpaid position. Tuition is so expensive these days, I do have to work two jobs just to keep up. Further, don’t call me an uninformed voter. I have read up on all the campaign materials, watched the candidate debates, looked up information from outsides sources be it newspapers, internet, etc. Most importantly, I have voted in every election (campus, state, federal) since I turned 18. It use to be that was enough, but these wisemen of ASI, every so grand, with their gold plated chairs shining on to us below, seem to think they know better.
Give me a break.

Erik,
The fact of the matter is you plainly stated and gave the reasons you believe that the Tuition Relief Now program should not be supported and then held up ASI support of the program as evidence that ASI is supporting students. I have little doubt that you grasp the inherent contradiction there so I can only assume you are playing political games and trying to have it both ways on this issue. Let me help you out with a way to avoid fee hikes. Don’t support the IRA increase.
Are you stating that you were not a part of the ASI vote in favor of the referendum? Or just saying that you didn’t put your name on the flier put out by ASI, presumably paid for out of the pockets of the people who were quoted, in support. Again, your statements, in the context of the discussion, made it very clear where your support is. If you were truly commited to remaining impartial in the election you would have avoided commenting other than to state that 7 out of 15 members were on scholarship.
Finally, I would like you to reread my post and find where I suggested that you should follow the voice of only one constituency. I stated that students who are criticizing or supporting the referendum, are doing what they should be doing, which is participating. Diminishing the viewpoints of others who don’t or can’t run for student office is not listening to the student body’s voice. If that was truly the aim, to determine what the wishes of as many students as possible were, then perhaps we would have seen neutral fliers around campus, stating the pros and cons of the referendum and encouraging students to vote.

Go Dogs! seems to think a healthy debate and discourse is wrong. We may not agree on the fee increase, but at least students are talking about it on campus. The more people talk about these important issues (campus affordability), the more information will come out, the more informed students will be.
Running for ASI is not the answer to everything. Some have the calling for representative government, other would prefer to remain students and citizens. What both representatives and the representative have IN COMMON is the NEED to engage each other.
Shame on you Go Dogs! for critiquing the right to free speech.

Ok my error Erik i was wrong if i believed you abstained, however you state yourself you voted NO to support Tution relief. In my opinion voting no is like abstaining from the issue.
And if you feel that the results of ASI supporting tuition relief is working,
why isnt ASI making beautiful flyers to post on campus to get the word out that we have a deadline to get the 400,000 signatures needed to place it on the November ballot and guess what again? ASI is not doing anything. This is why i argue my case because it is my money i pay into ASI.
And you should refrain from talking down to students just like the last posting was placed, the idea of “if you dont like it, run for office” is not an intelligble way of speaking to the people you claim to represent. And now you want to arrange meeting if theres anything i want to discuss than concersn me?
as an ASI representative that should have been your first response and you are too late, i already receive an email from someone on ASI who took that direction to meet with me and discuss the issues, whereas your approach id rather avoid. Consider the communication on this post finished.

I have not weighed in on any issue at all concerning elections. I simply stated that only 7 of 15 senators have the scholarships you are upset about. As for Tuition Relief Now, that is not a part of the election, therefore I am allowed to speak my mind on it.
I never said tuition relief was a bad idea. I said that the way they were going about it has some flaws that I am concerned with. If we could find another way to stop tuition hikes, rest assured, I would be in full support!
I have not endorsed any candidates or discussed the IRA, therefore, please don’t accuse me of giving my perspective. Also, as to following the student’s voice, I prefer to wait until Thursday so that I may follow the entire student body’s voice not just the voice of one constituency . No matter which side’s opinion comes out, I will respect and support it.
If you wish to contact me further with any disagreements feel free to come up to the ASI office and talk to me personally. I’d love to chat about any issues that concern you!

Erik, you make some rather peculiar arguments. You state that Tuition Relief is a bad idea, but point to it as evidence that ASI is helping students. You and your cohorts are against tuition increases in the abstract, where it is easy. Yet, you support fee increases in reality. Since you allude to the continuing difficulties of the economy, you surely are aware that fees will be going up another 10% next year. In light of that, it is rather disingenuous for someone to advocate for fee increases supporting the continued growth of athletics and at the same time claim to be against rising tuition. It is particularly galling when it is done by people who don’t have to pay the fee and tuition increases themselves, because they will paid for by the remaining students.
Please spare everyone the “As Election Commissioner, I am bound to be impartial in this election.” You weighed in on the topic, on election day, and made clear your perspective. Finally, the undercurrent to “if you don’t like the way ASI works, why don’t you run for a position and fix it rather than sit back blaming others,” is that only people who run for office have anything to say on this. If that is the way you feel Erik, why even hold this non-binding referendum? Declare what you have determined the student position to be and move on. The reality is that the students who are questioning, criticizing or supporting this fee increase are doing precisely what they should be doing. If you don’t want the scrutiny then you are in the wrong position.

Hector, before you accuse me of flip flopping, I would like to assist you in getting your facts right.
First of all, I did not abstain because I was “too afraid.” I voted NO because the idea sounds great and I think we need something to freeze tuition. However, upon further research and questioning the writers of the proposal, I fear that if we freeze tuition and the economy declines, as is predicted by many economists, we would be bringing in less money that is needed to support the CSU. As a result, students may suffer because classes will have to be cut in order to run on the frozen budget that we cannot legally change. I am in support of stopping rising tuition, but not in favor of quick fixes that may come back to bite us in the end.
Also, I may have voted no, but the Senate as a whole voted in support of Tuition Relief so you cannot accuse ASIof not helping students.
As Elections Commissioner, I am bound to be impartial in this election and therefore cannot voice my opinion on the IRA. But I can ask you, like I asked Alexis, if you don’t like the way ASI works, why don’t you run for a position and fix it rather than sit back blaming and critiquing others?

Actually Alexis only 7 of the 15 senators for ASI have these scholarships. The Senate also recently passed a referendum in support of Tuition Relief Now. This organization is trying to freeze tuition for five years by taxing millionaires (like the ones who donate to said scholarships) for the extra money. ASI is not against students and if you feel that way, why not run for a position and bring about the change students want instead of blaming others…

I’ll vote, but my only regret is that none of the current representatives are running for reelection. I would love to vote against them and throw them out of office.
Perhaps that is a good thing. ASI needs to be cleared of these career politicians who promise the world but only waste our money on trips to D.C, support increasing student fees (probably because the all have full scholarships), and have the nerve to tell us we don’t understand the issues.
I pity any candiidate for office who tells the voters they are uninformed, that we should trust them on their word alone.

Mackee in regards to your comments on educating ourselves and knowing the facts heres the real facts:
You are in favor of the IRA fee increase the $70 increase saying the student fees is desperately needed, were $50 will go towards athletics which will generate about $2 million per year and the other $20 per student will generate under $1 million towards academics. According to Fresno State budget books, since 2003, the Athletics programs men and women combined have received an expense budget of about $20 million.
Since 2004, the athletics budget has increased to over $22 million and rising. Any student need only study the budget books and see that some of these athletics programs also overspend. For example some teams in Athletics Corporation overspent their budget in 03/04 by a total of $369,060 and the following year a total of $321,789 for 04/05 and lowering the habit to $118,749. If the budgets were kept tight, some of those funds could balance out to start other title 9 sports teams that are necessary. Students who argue there are not enough fees to support athletics are fighting on the wrong battlefield and need to duke it out with the athletics programs rather than place strain on student fee costs.

However, with the national election coming up and the democratic primary still unfinished, it is not doubtful that attention will be drawn away from the ASI elections on Fresno State’s campus among the more politically informed circles, and toward the more overbearing matters that face the nation as a whole.

Yes tuition is set to increase 10% next year, and I understand that this is tough, because I support myself fully with no outside help.
I also understand that I would rather let my voice be heard that I would rather pay a $70 increase now to help IRA and Athletics now, instead of a $140 increase that will all go to a Div. 1AA or Div. 2 program.

Actually the IRA fee is currently $10, so and increase of $20 is actually tripling the budget.
This is not Academics vs. Athletics; these are increases that help a variety of students in different ways.
Know the facts and think logically, there is a drastic difference between the two budgets so if you look at it that way, you can see why it is proportioned that way.
Also KNOW THE FACTS! The fee will not pay for the lawsuits; Fresno State has insurance that takes care of that! Don’t be another uninformed voter!
Think about the students! What about the student-athletes that are affected by this? Are their educations not important?
I only came into this discussion because the “factsâ€Â are not correct.
And what about the reality that if we don̢۪t pass this now, they will be forced to implement an even higher fee just to maintain D-1!
Then what will we say? Scrap a D-I athletic department that good with the bad, is rich in tradition and has helped put Fresno State on the map nationally and has produced amazing men and women, not just on the field but also in the boardrooms and beyond.
I am a Presidential Candidate who will not just say what you want to hear, I will look at the facts and share the actual facts with you, the students, so that you can make a wise decision.
Don̢۪t believe the hype, check my facts and verify for yourself.

Thanks Guy, finally a student who sees what im saying…..i refuse to belive the IRA increase will not pay for the lawsuits because the money has to come from somewhere…how ironic a IRA fee increase hits us now…..and i too feel short changed when theres not enough grants or funding for academics, but theres millions available for athletics.
The math is simple, $70 increase in the ira,
$50 for athletics x 22,000 students= $1,100,000
$20 for academics x 20,000 students = $440,000
Students must educate themselves, Atheltics programs men and women combined receives over $20 million in thier budget and their budget has been increasing for the past 5 years.
the Instructionally related activiites has a budget of $400,000 and the administration wants only to double that?
I am losing my trust in the way funding is allocated at this university.

I agree with Hector, the IRA referendum is backwards. If they are going to raise our fees, why shouldn’t the bulk of it go to academics? I too came to college for an academic career. In the past three years I have been able to perform research, study subjects I love, and hone my skills for the real world. I was lucky. Not everyone has had the same opportunities as me. Funding the aspirations of a program that has not gone anywhere in the past decade besides mediocre bowl games and courtroom showdowns when classes are being cut and students are going to be turned away is a disgrace.
Why is it that no one understands that? The administration is not supporting affordable education by having this referendum, I have not heard any of the presidential candidates talk about these issues, and our student government is full of a bunch of do-nothings who fund trips to Washington D.C. to “lobby” support from our representatives when they can’t even lobby support from the administration back home. Talk about overextending your reach, no?

No, I do not care. A few of my friends are running for office but I am not voting for anyone.

This wil be my first time to vote for the best candidate who promises to keep tuition and IRA fees at a freeze. I also look forward to voe on the IRA. It is a complete discrace to academics that the IRA will take my money, and take the larger part towards athelctics and the smaller portion towards academics and grants. The sole reason why i came to college, to research, learn, and study.
Any ASI presidential candidate that can see this is an unequal way of “taxing” students just for better athletics programs has my vote.
