Thumbs up to the Fresno State softball team for sweeping their series against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors this weekend. Besides winning all three games, two of the games went into extra innings, so the team gets extra kudos from us at The Collegian for this testament to endurance.
Thumbs down to the kids of MTV’s new reality show, “The Paper,â€Â who misrepresent the reality of working at a school paper in so many ways, it almost hurts to watch. Of course, they’re in high school, and we have little evidence that our operations are representative of the “realityâ€Â of school journalism, but the poor kids can’t even get the style right on “editor in chief.â€Â Besides that, they use ugly fonts, have a webmaster for a non-existent Web site and celebrate after dropping every issue, while the rest of us just quietly lock up at the end of the night.
Thumbs down to losing your cell phone. In particular, the impact that losing this otherwise, relatively small expenditure can have on our everyday lives can be catastrophic. There is a good analog in classical music — a song by Gustav Mahler, called “Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen,â€Â which translates to something like “I am lost to the world.â€Â We feel this is sad, but mostly true. Thumbs up to finding your phone again, though.
Thumbs up to finals. Not that we are big fans of tests that have the capacity to absolutely sink your grade in a given class, but inasmuch as they signal the end of the semester (especially in the spring), they are something to look forward to. We̢۪re ready for summer!

Anything with “MTV” and “reality” in the same phrase is an oxymoron. Just like the Real World was an accurate depiction of life.

MTV’s “The Paper” is the absolute worst reality show ever created. In reference to their “ugly fonts, useless webmaster, and pointless ‘issue dropping celebrations,” I could not agree more.
P.S: I loved this “one-finger salute” when I read it, I was literally laughing out loud. Thanks for the positive release while in the thick of academic chaos.
