Football
The Fresno State football team made major changes to the 2008 season schedule, including adding two more national telecasts to the slate.
The biggest change is the replacement of Kansas State by Rutgers.
Kansas State requested to cancel the final game of a three-game series, which created the opportunity for an away game against Rutgers.
The game against Rutgers, the first time the Bulldogs will play a Big East team, moved the opening-day game against UCLA back.
Fresno State will face Rutgers on Labor Day to open the season. ESPN will televise the game at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 1.
Fresno State will play Rutgers again on Aug. 30, 2012.
The Bulldogs̢۪ game against UCLA was pushed back to Sept. 27.
The previous season opener against UCLA also gained a national audience. The game will be televised on ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2.
ESPN and ABC announced that it will televise a minimum of six Fresno State games this season.
Fresno State will still face Wisconsin at home on Sept. 13. The Wisconsin game will also be televised by ABC networks. The Badgers are ranked in the top 15 heading into the 2008 season.
Men̢۪s Tennis
The Fresno State men̢۪s tennis team swept DePaul and UC Davis in a doubleheader at home on Saturday.
The Bulldogs are 12-1 at home this year and 13-7 on the season.
Fresno State used its entire roster in the sweep, dropping only five sets.
Rudolf Siwy and Mirko Zapletal started the doubles play against DePaul and won 8-5.
Fresno State freshman Denny Fafek and sophomore Taylor Leiby also won in doubles play against DePaul.
In singles play, Siwy and Fafek picked up a combined four wins, two against DePaul and two against UC Davis.
The ‘Dogs have won four straight and will travel to UC Santa Barbara on Friday.
Women̢۪s Tennis
The Fresno State women̢۪s tennis team defeated Harvard 5-2 in Los Angeles on Saturday.
Fresno State swept the Crimson in doubles before taking four of six singles matches to complete the win.
Rentata Kucerkova and Tinesta Rowe played for the first time together this season, as well as junior Danon Beatty and sophomore Anastasia Petukhova.
Petukhova won at the No. 1 spot in singles. Kucerkova won at the No. 2 spot.
At the No. 3 spot, Rowe defeated Samantha Rosekrans.
Bruna Paes also won her match at the No. 6 spot.
The No. 16 Bulldogs are 10-6 on the season.
Fresno State will return home on Sunday to face No. 18 Pepperdine.
Women̢۪s Golf
The Fresno State women̢۪s golf team finished third at the NCAA Western Regional Preview. The Bulldogs finished 40-over to beat out 16 other teams.
The ‘Dogs beat out UNLV and San Francisco, both in the top 50.
Sophomore Hali Coppin had the top performance for the Bulldogs, tying for 11th place and her best collegiate finish.
Laura Luethke finished in 15th place and Pia Escandon finished in 32nd place.
The Bulldogs will play at the Peg Bernard Invitational on April 11 and 12.
Fresno State will host the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championships at Sunnyside Country Club on April 21-23.
Softball
Fresno State swept UC Davis in a doubleheader Tuesday, led by Morgan Melloh̢۪s complete game shutout in the first game.
Melloh had 8 strikeouts on Tuesday and is now 22-3 on the season.
The Bulldogs had 14 hits in the first game, with RBIs by Haley Perkins, Andrea Ortega and Jenna Cervantez.
In the second game, Fresno State started off with a five-run first inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Cervantez.
The ‘Dogs had 11 hits in the 6-2 win.
In the second game, Melloh pitched 3.1 innings, striking out five while only giving up two hits.
The Bulldogs return home for conference play against Nevada on April 4. Fresno State is 34-5 on the season and is currently on a 12-game winning streak.
Track and Field
Fresno State track and field placed in the top three this weekend at the Cal-Nevada Championships.
With 20 teams in the men̢۪s meet and 19 in the women̢۪s, the Bulldogs left their mark on the competition.
The men̢۪s team came in second behind reigning champion UCLA, while the women placed third in the 19-event competition.
Gary Lee, freshman long jumper, was named the WAC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week.
He leapt for 25-4 (7.72m) marking a personal best and a Fresno State freshman record.
He won the long jump and the Bulldog̢۪s first individual championship at the Cal-Nevada̢۪s.
This was Lee̢۪s third NCAA regional qualifying mark.
He also ran the first leg of the 4×100-meter relay, in which the ‘Dogs took second.
This was also a season best for the Fresno State men, with a time of 41.25.
The women̢۪s WAC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week was freshman Tiera Hilliard who won the 400-meter dash.
She placed first out of 33 individuals in the event with a personal best of 54.64, just .03 seconds shy of a NCAA regional qualifying time.
She also anchored the 4×100 and 4×400-meter relay teams, which both placed third.
