The Collegian took home 19 California College Media Association awards this weekend, including first place in Best Overall Design.
The Collegian also won five additional first place student journalism awards at the presentation on March 1 in San Francisco, as a part of the annual Associated Collegiate Press National College Newspaper Convention. The competition had more than 900 entries in more than 75 editorial, photo, design and advertising categories. Students from 22 California university publications were presented with more than 300 awards.
Former news editor Katrina Garcia won first place for Best Breaking News Story for her coverage of the May 2007 shooting at University Village.
A third place award in the Best News Feature category was given to reporter Farin Montanez for her article on high Chlamydia rates in Fresno County.
Former editor in chief Kirstie Hettinga won second place for Best Personal Opinion with her piece on Fresno State students̢۪ drinking habits and the Social Norms program.
Former editor in chief of La Voz de Aztlan and Collegian reporter Vicente Reyes won third place in the Best Arts and Entertainment Story category for his about article students no longer going to arcades.
Sports editor Jimmy Graben̢۪s column on the return of senior running back Clifton Smith won third place in the Best Sports Column category.
The Collegian won two of the three awards in the Sports Action Photo category. Former photo editor Andrew Riggs̢۪ photo of freshman running back Ryan Mathews from a game against Utah State won first place, while former photo editor Joseph Vasquez̢۪s photo of former women̢۪s basketball guard Paige Diggs won third place.
The Collegian also won two of the three awards in Best Sports-Page Design. Photo editor Juan Villa̢۪s photo essay on the football team̢۪s game against Oregon last fall won first place, while sports editor Kim Anderson̢۪s hockey prices layout won second place.
The Collegian again took home two of the three awards in the Best Headline category. Former news editor Brent VonCannon won first place and features editor Megan Reilly won second place.
Presentation editor Michael Uribes won first place for Best Infographic with his infographic on the breakdown of student tuition fees.
The Collegian won second place in the Best Back-to-School edition. The special basketball section of The Collegian won second place in the Special Section category.
The Collegian Online was the only Web site to place in all four of the Web site categories. The Collegian Online won third place in General Web Site Excellence, second place in Best Interactivity, third place in Breaking News Online and second place in the Best Use of Multimedia category.
