Students could be deciding this spring whether or not to increase student fees for a variety of activities.
Two separate organizations, athletics and Instructionally Related Activities (IRA), are considering increasing fees as a way to create revenue. Athletics fees would increase from $7 to $37, and IRA fees would increase from $10 to $20.
The IRA fee provides money for student participation in conferences, field trips, concerts and a variety of other activities. There is $400,000 in the fund right now, and it receives $2 million in requests per semester.
“There are always a lot more requests for money than there [is money] available,â€Â Vice President of Student Affairds Paul Oliaro said.
The athletics fee will fund a variety of ventures, including covering rising costs of student athletic programs in general, funding the new women̢۪s sports and increasing scholarship payouts for women athletes. The new women̢۪s sports and the increase of scholarship payouts for women̢۪s athletes are needed to help the university comply with Title IX.
Despite past troubles with athletics, Associated Students, Inc. President J.P. Moncayo said “let’s turn around and reinvest and move forward with the program.â€Â
The university is also examining other methods of funding athletics, including increasing ticket sales and fundraising from donors.
Nothing is concrete right now, said Oliaro, since formal proposals have not been submitted.
Once that has happened, there are two ways the university can seek student opinion. The most common way is to create a ballot for students to vote on the fee increases. The second would be to hold what̢۪s called a meaningful consultation, which consists of various focus groups that students can voice their opinions at.

Asked to pay 500% more for FS sports? Screw the Title IX compliance. Just increase the number of male students from 40% of the student body to 45% and we’ll automatically be in compliance.
