The Bulldogs scored 22 runs against Eastern Michigan in their doubleheader victories Monday night at Bulldog Diamond.

The second game victory also gave coach Margie Wright her 1,100th win at Fresno State.

In the first victory of the night, due to the 11-run mercy rule, freshman Morgan Melloh pitched for the Bulldogs and had eight strike outs.

“I’m feeling great, ya know, [because] we won,â€Â Melloh said. “We just dominated the whole game.â€Â

The 11 unanswered runs included home runs by catcher Caitlin Sticlich, second baseman Jenna Cervantez and shortstop Haley Gilleland.

“We showcased a lot of our strengths. We came through on defense, our pitching came through. We got people on, we got people in,â€Â third basemen Haley Perkins said. “We had Haley Gilleland, a freshman, hit her first home run.

“This past week we kind of sat back a little bit and didn’t really attack, but tonight I felt like we completely attacked in both games.â€Â

In the first inning, the Bulldogs came out swinging and scored three runs.

Perkins was the first to get on base for the ‘Dogs and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt by Gilleland.

With Perkins on second, Stiglich hit her fourth home run of the season to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.

After Cervantez was hit by a pitch and Aja Schueber walked, Melloh singled to right and Cervantez scored from second, putting the Bulldogs up 3-0.

Melloh came out strong in the second inning and pitched to just three batters.

In the Bulldogs̢۪ half of the inning, Perkins singled to center field and reached second on an Eagles̢۪ error.

With Perkins in scoring position, Gilleland hit a triple and the Bulldogs went up 4-0.

A single to center field by Stiglich allowed Gilleland to score and put the ‘Dogs up by five.

Three of the eight strikeouts by Melloh came in the third inning, who is now 8-1 overall.

“It feels great to be on the mound and grow and realize your teammates are there to back you up,â€Â she said.

The final six Bulldog runs came in the fourth inning, including a three-run home run to center by Scheuber.

A double to left field by Ashley White scored Michelle Palazuelos, who was pinch-running for Melloh.

With the bases loaded, Perkins hit an infield single and scored White from third, putting the ‘Dogs up 10-0.

The Bulldogs sealed the victory when Gilleland walked with the bases loaded, forcing in Coronado from third.

“I think everybody was a leader because they stepped up to the plate and they got hits when we needed it and we started coming back,â€Â Melloh said. “We did an awesome job.â€Â

The Bulldogs had 14 hits over the Eagles̢۪ one.

In game two, the Bulldogs got on the board in the second inning after Brooke Phipps walked, then stole second.

A single to right by Perkins brought Phipps home from second followed by a double by Gilleland to score Perkins.

The Bulldogs increased their lead by three in the bottom of the fourth.

Palazuelos singled and would advance to both second and third and eventually score on Eagles̢۪ errors.

A double by Stiglich brought Gilleland and Perkins home for a 5-0 lead.

Nicole Angene pitched for the Bulldogs and had two strikeouts in five innings.

Melloh pitched in the sixth and had four strikeouts.

The Eagles gained some momentum, however, in the fifth and sixth innings when they scored three runs.

An infield single by Ashely Strauss cut the Bulldog lead to four and a triple by Stacie Skodinski scored two runs in the sixth.

“I think they can be as good as any team, we have to take it seriously,â€Â Melloh said. “We just can’t slack off to a team where they can come back and score.â€Â

The Eagles, within just two, was enough for the ‘Dogs to come out in the bottom of the sixth and score six more runs for the 11-3 win.

“I feel like our whole team is stepping up, I don’t really feel like anyone is waiting for someone else to step up and lead the way,â€Â Wright said. “Everybody is.â€Â

Gilleland scored her first home run of the year to put the Bulldogs up 7-3. Cervantez also had a two-run home run to advance the lead to six.

A single to center field by Mallory Perkins was enough to bring in the last two runs to give the Bulldogs the game.

Fresno State is now 10-3 overall and undefeated at home.

In the Palm Springs tournament the team attended last weekend, it went 3-2, beating Long Island and ranked UNLV and Texas.

“I think this team can beat anybody in the country,â€Â Wright said. “We have to play our best and I think when we do that, we can beat anyone.â€Â
