Intramurals are a large part of campus life.
Team names are one of the many privileges that students have when signing up for intramurals.
These team names push the limits of creativity and allow students to showcase their individuality.
Especially at Fresno State, team names put that finishing touch when playing intramurals.
Davide Ghilarducci, a 21-year-old senior at Fresno State enjoys playing on basketball, football and softball intramural teams.
Ghilarducci, a liberal studies major, has played for numerous intramural teams.
He was the captain of The Regulators and Skills That Kills.
“There are pretty much no restrictions on team names,â€Â Ghilarducci said.
Ghilarducci, a veteran intramural player, has heard many different team names throughout his time spent playing intramurals.
There have been such team names as Air Force, Team 209 and Baker Boys.
Team names have no guidelines or restrictions for any intramural sport.
Katie Kasik, criminology major from San Jose, currently plays soccer intramurals for team Get Some.
Kasik, a 20-year-old junior, plays to stay in shape and to have a good time with her friends.
“Team names can be just about anything you want as long as there is no profanity or racism in them,â€Â Kasik said.
Team names can come from a variety of perspectives. Some students have even gone as far as naming their teams after their favorite foods.
“My team’s first game was going to be against Carne Asada,â€Â Kasik said. “Since then, I have always tried to have a creative name like that for my team.â€Â
Team names can be a wide range of anything the players want.
Some of the intramural team names can be questionable and may be offensive.
Sophomore and kinesiology major Kaitlin Wiselogel experienced this first hand.
Wiselogel, a Tracy native, likes to be a part of intramurals to stay active in sports.
Wiselogel, 19, just recently played intramural football for the team Bombs for Yo Moms.
“I was offended when we played against the MILF Killers, I found that quite derogatory,â€Â Wiselogel said. “Another name that I also found to be disrespectful was the Purple Back Door Pirates.â€Â
Such names push the boundaries of individuality, but are still allowed.
If a team does not have a name, the intramural coordinator will assign one.
Students can also sign up for intramurals alone. Those students who are assigned to a team are called free agents.
Students at Fresno State like to play intramurals for the competition and to stay in shape, and team names allow students to have a freedom of expression.
“Students will push the limits to come up with the craziest names,â€Â Ghilarducci said.
