December̢۪s music calendar at California State University, Fresno includes several student groups̢۪ fall semester final performances, holiday-flavored jazz, gospel and a kickoff recital of student composers̢۪ work.
All events are open to the public, with tickets available through the Box Office in the Music Building next to the Concert Hall. The Box Office is open 11 a.m.-1 p.m. weekdays and one hour prior to performance.
Music for the month begins 1-6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, with the Fresno State Saxophone Festival in the Concert Hall, featuring Dr. David Brennan, a professor of saxophone at La Sierra University and Master̢۪s College in Southern California. The event includes performances and clinics for university and high school students and concludes with a concert.
Other highlights are:
· The Student Composers Recital, featuring work by music composition students getting its first public exposure, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in the Wahlberg Recital Hall
* The Fresno State Jazz Bands Holiday Concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the Concert Hall.
* The final fall semester performance by the Fresno State Symphonic Band at 7:30 p.m. Dec 6 in the Concert Hall, under the direction of Timothy Todd Anderson.
* “Winterreise,â€Â Schubert’s final song cycle of a young man’s inner journey from sadness to madness, with faculty voice instructor Paul Murray, baritone, and staff piano accompanist Hadem Nadim at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 8 in the Concert Hall.
* The President’s Quintet performs chamber music at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Wahlberg Recital Hall.
* Dr. Thomas Loewenheim conducts the Fresno State Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 10 in the Concert Hall.
* Fresno State Gospel Choir performs in a concert with a holiday accent, at 4 p.m. Dec. 16 at the Concert Hall.
