One of Eduardo Rodriguez̢۪s friends brings a surge protector to school every day. Rodriguez, his friend and several other students use it to power their laptops while sitting in the University Student Union.
Rodriguez, a political science major in his third year, said they do this because even though there is plenty of wireless access, there aren̢۪t enough outlets available.
“That was how we kind of found our way around it,â€Â Rodriguez said.
The upper level of the University Student Union has 23 stations against the wall for laptop computers, and each one has a single outlet students can plug their laptops into. At about 3 p.m. Tuesday, all but seven stations were in use.
There are other outlets stationed on various walls, but several of them are blocked by metal plates. Vidush Kumar, a senior and business major, also has trouble finding outlets when he needs them. He thinks the library construction is a factor, since he noticed more students using the student union “after the library became smaller.â€Â
Fresno State has several wireless hot spots on campus, including the Peters Business Building, parts of the Speech Arts building and McKee Fisk, according to a map on the university Web site. Kumar said the student union is the only place he has trouble finding outlets.
According to the university’s “Strategic Plan for Excellence III,â€Â the goals for upgrading technology on campus include expanding “accessible technology for the entire campus community,â€Â and expanding the university’s Web presence. The Web page with this information was last updated in 2006.
Aside from outlet access, students have few complaints about the wireless service on campus.
Rodriguez said that wireless hotspots were “pretty easy to find.â€Â
Kumar said, “The connection is pretty good.â€Â
