Margie Wright is a name known primarily for her successes on the softball field.
Earlier this year, she filled a new role as a key witness in the case of Lindy Vivas.
According to The Fresno Bee, lawyers became “combativeâ€Â over Wright’s potential testimony.
When she did take the stand, the atmosphere grew tense, the article stated.
She testified on behalf of women in sports and said there is still a long way to go to justify title IX.
In her testimony, she said that in April 2000 she saw a large poster inside a university office that read “Ugly women athletes dayâ€Â.
The poster allegedly had stick figures of female athletes with photos of male school administrators̢۪ heads pasted on top.
Inside the office, Wright said she saw three male athletic department officials — Jon Fagg, Steve Weakland and Scott Johnson — “eating a potluckâ€Â in celebration of the day.
In 2004, prior to testifying, Wright filed a retaliation complaint with the Department of Education̢۪s Office for Civil Rights, charged with monitoring whether schools are obeying the law.
Wright met twice with Michael Marderosian, now the university’s representative, in 2003 to discuss her legal options for alleged discrimination and Title IX violations she had witnessed.
Wright never hired Marderosian but Leonard Herr, who represents her now, and Dan Siegel, Diane Milutinovich̢۪s lawyer, said Wright revealed confidential information to Marderosian in their attorney-client relationship.
Herr and Siegel said Marderosian or another lawyer representing the university may use information from the 2003 meetings against Wright during questioning at the Milutinovich trial, The Bee reported.
