Training is involved in preparing for a marathon, but for Tim Borland, running 63 marathons in 63 consecutive days requires more than just stamina.
What he needs are runners who can support his cause to follow him on his journey.
Borland, an ultra-marathon runner, will be racing through Fresno and running a full marathon, or 26.2 miles, on Saturday to raise funds to help find a cure for A-T, or ataxia-telangiectasia.
A-T is a progressive, degenerative disorder that causes loss of muscle control, typically leaving children who suffer from it to be dependent on wheelchairs by age 10. Signs of A-T in children usually show up during the second year of life.
These children also tend to have a high risk of cancer. While about 500 patients have A-T, the disease may be more widespread, since many children with A-T die at a young age and may not have been properly diagnosed.
For each stop from Anaheim to New York City, 15 runners are allowed to run the marathon with Borland as part of the fundraiser.
Borland teamed up with the A-T Children̢۪s Project, a nonprofit organization that raises money to help find a cure, to improve therapies for A-T, to raise awareness and to promote research for the disease, which currently has no cure. The mega-marathon began Sep. 3 and is set to conclude Nov. 4 in New York City.
Aletia Patterson, fundraising coordinator for the A-T Children̢۪s Project, said as of Tuesday afternoon, 13 spots are still open to run the marathon with Borland.
Anyone who is interested in running with Borland or otherwise helping out with the race can log on to www.ATCureTour.org and click on the first link, “Attend.â€Â Then choose Fresno as the location.
