Golf
Both golf teams finished play yesterday at the 2007 Giustina Memorial Classic at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in_Corvallis, Ore. Each team competed separately against the nine other teams, but were given a combined score.
The Bulldogs̢۪ combined score of 1774 strokes placed them fourth among nine other schools after two rounds.
The men̢۪s golf team finished in second place in its_first tournament of the season. Three male golfers finished in the top 10 individually.
Matt Ryan finished strong with a third round of 70 to tie for fifth place. He led the team shooting 6-under-par. Brad Wyatt and Todd Angel also placed in the top 10 tying for eighth place, shooting 4-under-par. Grant Doverspike tied for 29th, and true freshman Michael Gideon tied for 41st.
The women̢۪s team tied with UC Irvine for seventh place, shooting a combined 923 to finish a stroke behind Boise State.
Laura Luethke led the ̢۪Dogs finishing 8-over-par. Taylor Siebert and Pia Escandon finished at 14-over-par and were tied for 20th. Hali Coppin finished 34th while Tiffany Derksen was tied for 39th.
Cross Country
For the week of Sept. 10-16, freshman Erick Garcia and sophomore Marissa McPhail have been named the Western Athletic Conference men̢۪s and women̢۪s Cross Country Athletes of the Week.
McPhail won her first collegiate race Sept. 15 at the Hornet Jamboree in Sacramento. She won the women̢۪s 5K race with a time of 18:27, helping the ̢۪Dogs to a second-place finish behind Nevada. McPhail beat Nevada̢۪s Christa Avena by six seconds.
Garcia finished the men̢۪s 8K race in second with a time of 24:18.
The ̢۪Dogs close second place finish was one point behind Nevada.
Softball
The Amateur Softball Association announced this week that former Bulldog Laura Berg made her fourth Olympic team.
Fans all over the United States will have the opportunity to see the team when they go on a 40-city tour in February titled ‘Bound 4 Beijing.’
Lovieanne Jung also made the national team. Jung is also a former Fresno State softball player who made a Women̢۪s College World Series appearance with the Bulldogs in 1999.
Jung made her first appearance at the national level in 2002 at the ISF World Championships and will be attending her second Olympic Games.
The games will take place in Beijing in 2008.
Women̢۪s Soccer
Defender Amanda Reyes has been named Defensive Player of the Week after assisting the Bulldogs in wins over Northern Colorado and Wyoming.
Reyes has been credited with leading the defense in both shutouts. She also scored one of three goals in the win over Northern Colorado.
Other goal scorers included Chelsea Davis and Ali Sill against Northern Colorado and Nicole Gutierrez had the lone goal against Wyoming.
Two road games remain for the Bulldogs, now 2-2 in the last four games.
