Picture this:
It is your first day on campus. Hundreds of students are walking past you. They all look like they know where they are going. You are standing in front of a campus map, but while the map told you where you are currently standing, you know that getting across campus is going to be another story. Also, among things not answered by the map are where to find food, a place to study and the place to go to buy your textbooks.
Luckily, now you have this list.
Farm Market
With 65 flavors of ice cream, Fresno State wines and other Fresno State grown and processed treats, the market is the place to go for both seasonal produce and other foods. The store is located on the corner of Barstow and Chestnut and is open weekdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Student Rec Center
Want to get in shape but not so crazy about paying to join a gym? Go to the Student Rec. Center on campus. Right next to the Save Mart Center, the center is a convenient place to go after class. With treadmills, elliptical trainers, free-weights, indoor basketball, showers and more, students have a state-of-the-art facility available for free. Don̢۪t forget your student ID. Hours are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday. The Rec. Center at 5010 N. Woodrow Ave.
Financial Aid
Paying for college can be more of a headache than finals. Between food, rent, books and other expenses, it̢۪s easy to see why college students are poor. Luckily, the Financial Aid office can show you how to apply for grants, scholarships and other programs. The first few weeks of school should be a really busy time at the office, so go as soon as possible to see what you qualify for. Stop by Joyal 296 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays (closed 12-1 p.m.) or call 278-2182. Or check out the Financial Aid website.
Student Union
The University Student Union has undergone some changes, but still has plenty of choices and it is in the center of campus next to the bookstore. Subway, Panda Express and the Union Snack bar are still there, but Chic-fil-A is taking Taco Bell’s space in the food court. Also around are the nail salon, banking and postal services, bowling alley and study space. The USU lounge is open Monday to Thursday 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Campus Police
Paying that parking ticket that you got on the first day might make you bitter for a moment, but knowing that you are safe should make you feel better, especially if you have a night class. After your class gets out at 10 p.m., you can call the campus police for an escort at 278-2132. To pay that ticket, the Campus Police satellite office is open in the University Pavilion 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday. The administrative office is located at 2311 E. Barstow and is open 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
Advising Services
Whether you are an incoming Freshman, a transfer student or a senior wanting to see if you are on track, Advising Services can help you with your goals. If you have questions about which classes to take, what major to choose or exactly what transferred from your last college, you can find the answers you need. Doors are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays in Joyal 224 or give them a call 278-1787.
Henry Madden Library
Yes, construction is still going on at the Henry Madden Library, but it is open. Laptops, periodicals, music and other materials are available. But, procrastinating will probably mean you won̢۪t get the book you need the morning that an assignment is due. Order books through the library̢۪s website at least one day in advance to make sure that you get the book you need. Hours Monday to Thursday 7:45-8 p.m., Friday 7:45-5 p.m., closed Saturday and 1-8 p.m. Sunday.
Health Center
If you are paying full price for prescriptions or doctor visits– stop. Visit the health center on campus. It offers a variety of medical services at prices that even college students can afford. From filling prescriptions to psychological services, many things are free and the others are low cost. The center, located at 5044 N. Barton Ave., is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call 278-2734 for more information.
Kennel Bookstore
From textbooks to a last minute scantron or snack, the Kennel Bookstore has just about everything you need. Next to the Student Union, the bookstore is in the middle of everything. It will be packed for the first few weeks of school. Extended hours for the week of Aug. 27 are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday. For regular semester hours check out the Kennel Bookstore online.
Ticket Office
Athletic Ticket Office
Sports fan? Fresno State students get to cheer “Go ‘Dogs!â€Â for free at home games with a student ID. This applies to many of the sports, but not all of them. For more information, go the ticket office located at 1600 E. Bulldog Lane (by the football stadium), call 278-DOGS, or surf over to gobulldogs.com to find ticket information about your favorite sports team. Ticket office hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
