Letter to the Editor
This letter
is in response to Friday’s article, “Registration Drive Attracts
Late Voters.” In the article there is a quote from Susan Rowe, a
trustee with the local Democratic Party, that claims “they”
(Republicans) are trying “to put the draft in effect.”
Actually, George W. Bush said that he would maintain an “All-Volunteer
Army” during both Presidential debates. Also, the bill to mandate
military service for men and women from 18-26 years old, was struck down
in the House 402-2 (10/6/04 L.A. Times) even with a Republican majority.
If “they” want to bring back the draft so bad they sure aren’t
trying that hard. This is just another attempt by the Democratic Party
to demonize the President through unfounded accusations.
There was also mention of school tuition increases and a lack of grants
for students. If Mrs. Rowe wanted to be really helpful she would build
a time machine so we could all reconsider our vote in the 2002 governor’s
race. Let’s all get out on November 2 and vote. That’s truly
a matter of concern.

I’m writing
about the October 8th article titled “Registration Drive Attracts
Late Voters.”
Susan Rowe, the trustee with the Democratic Party stated “they are
trying to reinstate the draft,” which implies that “they”
is really the Republicans and the Bush Administration.
That is completely false. Perhaps before someone makes an accusation like
that, they should be a little more informed. Bill HR 163, the Universal
National Service Act was introduced by Representative Charles Rangel,
a Democrat from New York.
In January of 2003, Senate Bill 89 was introduced by Senator Fritz Hollings,
a Democrat from South Carolina. Other names that can be found supporting
the bills all happen to be Democrats, as well.
This week HR163 was knocked down 402-2 and even if by some miracle it
had passed, President Bush wouldn’t have let it go any further.
Students need to see fair and factual statements from both major parties
and make up their own minds on where they stand without having to sift
through tons of empty rhetoric to get there.
And by the way, there IS a Republican Club at Fresno State.
