Lyles Center ranks high for enterprise initiatives, vourse offerings

After Entrepreneur magazine’s May issue ranked Fresno State as one of the top 100 entrepreneurial colleges in the United States out of more than 300, another step was taken by the college to solidify that ranking and boost enterpreneurship. The university’s Lyles Center for Innovation and Enterpreneurship and Boston’s National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance hosted the Invention2Venture conference on campus Saturday, which taught participants how to develop an idea into a full-fledged business.More>>

When I first heard the surprising news that Marilyn Manson’s old band, The Spooky Kids, was releasing a disc of old demos, I was excited and a little curious to see what the band sounded like before they became world famous actresses, supermodels and serial killers. I heard rumors that Spooky Kids demo tapes were floating around on the Internet, but wasn’t interested in buying some second-rate bootleg of something that probably sounded bad and simply wasn’t good. If I wanted that, I could listen to old tapes of my first band recorded on a Karaoke machine when I was a kid.More>>

What would possess a young woman on the brink of adulthood to travel about 6,400 miles across the globe to a whole new country, culture and way of life? For Jelena Pandzic, a native of Split, Croatia, the opportunity to continue to play tennis while going to school was just too good to give up. Even if it meant leaving behind everything she knew. “ In Europe, you either give up playing,” Pandzic said. “Or go to America.” Pandzic, who has been playing tennis for 14 years and is currently the highest nationally ranked freshman at No. 15, said going to school in Europe and trying to play tennis is a tough task.More>>

The old joke says that everything I needed to know I learned in kindergarten. I’m not so sure this is too far off the mark. It’s been six years since I graduated high school—three years at a community college in Southern California and three at Fresno State double majoring in English and print journalism. The 2004-05 Fresno State course catalog says, “The overall objective of General Education is to create a context wherein basic skills are developed and strengthened, scholarship and disciplined thinking emerge, awareness and reflection occur, and ultimately—the integration of knowledge begins.”More>>
