Fresno State students take back the night

Halloween '03
Horror movies provide a screaming good time

Halloween has become a major holiday. Sales have surpassed Valentine’s Day and Thanksgiving. And the level of excitement at Fresno State is just as high.

Students at Fresno State have a variety of ways to spend the spooky holiday. Some take time to watch their favorite horror movies.

“ The Ring, that was really scary, when the little girl came out of the TV,” student Shauna Perron said. Perron, Taylor Jones and Gaozong Thao mentioned which movies they think are the scariest out there.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is at the top of their list. Perron said one reason it is so scary is because it is true. The group also mentioned The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street and Ringu, the original Japanese version of The Ring.

“ My dad saw it. He liked it, but he didn’t like the subtitles,” Jones said of Ringu.

Alicia Gutierrez and Fabiola Campos also put The Ring at the top of their list. Gutierrez said the young girl is the scariest character in the movie. They also listed What Lies Beneath and Texas Chainsaw Massacre among their favorite spooky movies.

But neither Gutierrez nor Campos is planning to watch any horror movies on Halloween. Guiterrez said she is planning to go to a haunted house or on a hayride, or both. Campos said she plans to go trick or treating.

Other students on campus do have plans to watch a horror movie on Halloween—Scary Movie 3.

Javier Segura and Alfredo Ruvalcaba said they are planning to dress up as Cheech and Chong and see the movie tonight. Segura also has plans to take his girlfriend to a corn maze.

Amanda Curiel said there isn’t much to do on halloween, so she’ll resort to the one thing she said there is to do.

“ Parties, partying,” Curiel said.

Curiel and Maria and Erica Gil were planning to go to a party and dress up. Curiel is going as a Flapper, Maria Gil as a vampire and Erica Gil as an angel.

Even though they’re not watching a movie tonight, they still have their favorite horror flicks. Curiel said the Halloween movies, with Michael Myers, are her favorites.

Curiel and the Gils were also excited about Scary Movie 3. “I’ve seen it; it’s good,” Erica Gil said.

But there are those who have less-traditional plans for this evening. Tamyra Alston is working.

Danisha Lockhart-Moore and LaShondias Ware are going to parties but will not dress up.
