As a member of Residence Life Staff at University Courtyard, Fresno State’s on-campus living, I was appalled when I read the article “Two ASI execs on probation.â€Â Part of my job as an Assistant Resident Director is dealing with residents in alcohol-related situations. We have strict rules and sanctions in place regarding the consumption of alcohol, and I have the responsibility to enforce these. More important than that, I have the responsibility of maintaining my own reputation of being “above reproach.â€Â I cannot drink with my residents, especially those who are underage, because this would harm my ability to enforce policy.
For two elected ASI officials, such disregard of the rules in place during their retreat and of state law is intolerable. These two were given a slap on the hand and told not to do any more naughty things. At University Courtyard, we have lost staff members for less egregious actions than those of Mr. Mason and Ms. Flores.
Personally, I do not want to be represented by officials who have so disregarded their positions in the Fresno State community. They have cast a shadow on the students here, and their actions should have real consequences. Since it hasn̢۪t been said yet, I will say it: Mason and Flores need to resign and remove their irresponsibility from our student government.
